4 position switch mess

I'm re doing my cubs dash and taking everything off and cleaning it up.. I noticed on the 4 position switch whoever wired it up soldered two wires where the fuse would go on the back of the switch, down to the fuse in the bottom of the dash. Maybe because it was a temporary fix??? The didn't have a spare fuse for the switch???

Hi,
In your 1st post last year, you said it is a 1951 Cub.
A 1951 Cub didn't use the 4 position switch, with the fuse on the switch.
The 4 position switch was used up to Cub serial number 115403, which was made in 1950.
It is used with the Relay charging system. The Relay is mounted on top of the generator.
It controls the charging rate, and the lights.
Would you write the Cub serial number on here please.

A 1951 Cub used a 3 position switch, for the lights only. It has no fuse on it. It uses the fuse holder at the bottom hole of the dash.
You didn't say how the starter bushing worked, or if the hole is worn. Or I missed it, if you wrote it.

Sorry Glen,
I ordered a rebuilt kit for the starter and a new switch. I rebuilt it myself and it works now. The hole in the nose for the bushing was a little wormed out but the new bushing went on just fine. It works great. I'm going to have to Rewire the while tractor so I just went ahead and removed all the old wires from the back of the switch and was able to melt all that solder from the fuse holders .

Hi,
Good that you are cleaning the parts.
It is sort of confusing what year Cub you have, it has parts from a Cub older than 1951.
I think someone wrote in one of your older posts that the steering gear housing could have been replaced with a 1951 housing, the serial number plate is on the housing, so that plate is for a 1951 Cub.
I think I posted info before about the date codes, you can look and see what year they say the castings were made.
The bushing has to fit tight in the end of the starter. It can fall out if it is loose in the hole.

The engine date code is visible in your 1st pic above. 12 16 T
T is 1950.
The number below it is the block part number, 251341R2.
The number in your other pic is the part number of the right side extension.

Below is info about date codes.
Cubs have date codes cast on the larger castings of the tractor.
The codes tell the date the parts were made.
The year is a letter code.
Below is info from TM Tractor showing what date codes are.

The code on the clutch housing is usually partly behind the clutch pedal.

Please look for more date codes.

There should be an engine serial number on the left side of the engine.
The engine serial number will be close the tractor serial number, but not the same, it may be a few hundred, or a few thousand above the tractor serial number, if it is the original engine, sometimes people replace the engine.
Below is a page from the 1950 Cub owner's manual showing where the engine serial number is.

The number is stamped in the block, you may need to clean the area, and use a light to see it. :)

Glen, here's the best picture I could get of it. Here's a recap of what I have found I have. 6v 3 brush generator with CUT OUT....4 position light switch...6v coil and distributor...will all these parts work together???

Yes those parts work together.
The Battery Ignition unit came out in mid 1950 at Cub serial number 115403. It may be an original part of your Cub, I don't know. Some Cubs were changed from a magneto to it.
The voltage regulator, and 3 position light switch came out at that number too.
I don't know why it has the older charging system parts.
Raymond Durban's Database says a Cub with engine serial number 125560 probably was made in January, 1951.
A 1951 Cub would have had a 3 brush generator with a voltage regulator, and a 3 position light switch.
The HA by the number means the engine has the high altitude head.
If you look at the date codes that I wrote about above, we can see if other parts of the Cub are the same year.

That is a 20 amp fuse, and it is for the lights.

Hi,
Yes, that is the right wiring diagram.
The 6 volt Cubs use number 2 cable from the battery to the starter. The diagram says number 1, the tractors it says the diagram is for have bigger engines than Cubs.

There is info about the light switch fuse in the 1949 Cub owner's manual on here, on pages 35 and 63.

I have attached a diagram for the 4 position switch that l found the easiest to follow.
I made my own wiring harness following this diagram, no issues.
