Re: Fuel tank cleaning help.
You have some rust.
I would clean up the tank and seal the rust. Red Kote and POR are the two sealants usually recommended.

Re: Fuel tank cleaning help.
What can I use to clean the rust???... I poured a little gas and some 15 40 oil and sloshed it around to give me ( in my mind)some kind of rust protection for now until I get it figured out.

Also, I might add, as soon as you get the tank cleaned, add something to inhibit the formation of flash rust which will happen quickly after the muriatic acid. If you don't want to use a sealant it you can fog the inside of the tank with a fogging oil or just pour some motor oil in it and roll the tank around to coat the insides well.
If you're going to use a sealant, I wouldn't clean the tank until you have the sealant in hand. The flash rust will form quickly.

Re: Fuel tank cleaning help.
How much muriatic acid do you use and how long? you do not use 7 gallons of it and fill the tank do you?

Re: Fuel tank cleaning help.
I usually remove the sediment bowl (I think the muriatic acid will damage it) and replace it with a pipe plug. I also remove the gas cap (I'm not sure if it will hurt the cap or not). I pour in an amount, probably somewhere between a cup and a quart, tape up the filler neck very well with duct tape and roll the tank around several times to ensure complete complete coverage.
I'll usually set the hood/tank assembly on saw horses and let it set for 15 minutes or so then pull the pipe plug to drain it into a container.

Re: Fuel tank cleaning help.
I dont think Ill use a tank sealer. Ive seen more videos about tank sealer failing than I have working..lol. I know some people have has good luck using them though. I do another question Do neutralize the acid with baking soda while its in the tank ?? or do I pour the acid out then put baking soda in the tank??

Most, if not all failures have been caused by not following the product's instructions.

Re: Fuel tank cleaning help.
I had a tank sealed by a radiator shop that was also doing pin hole repairs. I assume they knew what they we doing. I wish I did not do it. I find red in the sediment bowl so something is in the carb.
I try to keep my gas dry and use the marine sta bil ( blue not red) and try to keep the tanks full. Most are pretty clean.

Re: Fuel tank cleaning help.
It will work, but it is very difficult to get an electrode past the baffle to clean rust in that area and not touch the tank metal.
