174 planter/IH duplex hopper

Postby Cooter » Tue Apr 09, 2024 6:41 pm

Hi all, I’m a new member to the forum. I own a 1961 cub with cultivators. It also has some of the parts for a seed hopper and side fertilizer dresser set up. I’m looking to find a 174 set up. As I would like to plant corn and beans together I was wondering if the IH Duplex hopper is compatible with a 174 sprocket set up and forward mounted fertilizer hopper base. I have read some old posts and see there are some planter experts in the group. As these parts are specific to a particular set up, getting hard to find(I’m told) and expensive, I would hope to get it right on the first shot. Any help would be appreciated. I have pics of what I currently have on cub. Thanks Bob

Quite a bit involved in planter/sidedresser setup. I’d suggest starting with the manuals here on the forum. The duplex hopper will require the correct drive adapter if I remember correctly. Also, keep in mind the seed plates for the duplex are harder to find. If you do find a unit you are interested in, take a copy of manual with you so you are reasonably sure you get everything. Good luck in your search

Edit: I see this is your first post. Manuals won’t be available to you until you make another post

ThanksTom,
I'm going to get the manuals and keep looking. I see different individual parts for sale but even with the manuals it is tough for a novice like me to determine their compatibility. My goal is to have that as a dedicated setup on the cub for sweetcorn bean planting on the family farm in upstate NY. I've been pretty successful planting other stuff like squash and pumpkins with my little Cole one row planter. Thanks again, Bob

My advice would be to find a complete unit and maybe sell the parts you have. It might help if we knew what parts you do have. And here’s another thought: there are folks here who have mounted a Cole planter on their cub

Yes Tom.
That’s my thoughts exactly. Buy a complete unit and sell off if necessary what parts i already have. Do you know of anyone selling a complete 174 unit possibly with a duplex hopper. I’ve been looking but with no luck. My timeline window for getting that accomplished this year is dwindling.
Lol. Thanks for the advice. Bob

Place an ad here on the forum in The Vine. A great group of guys here, hopefully one of them can help you. I sold my planter units several years ago except for my fast hitch planter. Tough decision, as that is one of my favorite things to do with a cub. But I have a smallish garden and it didn't see much use.

duplex hopper is kinda rare and not many plates available for it, and those are hard to finf, a combpnation or Richmond hopper are more common and plates are out there for them

If you’re on Facebook, could try joining one or more farmall cub groups. There are probably several. Keep your ad going here, sooner or later you’ll get a bite.

There was a guy I was trading conversation with who said he had what I needed and might be able to put something together eventually. Been trying to get a better timetable from him on when he could put something together but now he's not responding. I guess I annoyed him to death. Lol! Thanks again and let the hunt continue. Bob
