Warm Starting Problems

Postby TheBeekeeper » Sun Apr 30, 2006 6:02 pm

Hi Everyone,

Its been a while since I have posted but I'm having a new problem I hope someone can help me out with. I rebuilt the carb on my cub last fall and followed all the recommendations here on the site and in the manuals. The spark plugs were checked an gapped appropriately. Usually, the cub starts up 1st or 2nd time with just a bit of choke. It seems though that whenever it gets warmed up, say 30-60 minutes and if for some reason it stalls it just won't restart normally. If I pull it to start with another vehicle, there is no problem, it starts right up and runs. I am trying to figure out what might be causing this particular issue. I thought it was the carb, but since it was just rebuilt and sparks were checked and the timing was adjusted I am running out of ideas.

Oh, by the way it stalled out today because we hit a medium size rock while mowing :(

Thanks in advance
1950 Cub

Your problem sounds like a typical weak / bad coil. Whether battery ignition or magneto, older coils tend to break down as they heat up and they tend to heat up because they are old and breaking down. (viscious cycle). I would carefully check the temperature of the coil when the tractor is hot and fails to start. You could also check the strength of the spark when attempting a hot start.
The condensor is another possibility but I'd put my money on the coil and that is where I'd look first.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

as BD siad, symptoms indicate a bad coil, or possibly condencer. Another possibility is if the manifold is loose or leaking and a gap opens when it is warm.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

my "stainless" was always doing that. did all the above, the frequency (basic tuneup stuff) decreased dramitically. however continued, until battery connections were cleaned, replaced/repaired, and all grounds cleaned. havent had that problem since DOCFEST, course now that i said something, it'll start acting up again.
