Runs 30 seconds and dies!!!

Postby hoof » Mon May 01, 2006 10:34 pm

My father and I are dyed in the wool Allis men, but I got a cub cheap for the wife to mow the yard.

The problem is I can get it to run (starts right up actually) and runs like a champ for maybe thirty seconds and then stalls out. I cleaned the sediment bowl and with the line disconnected fuel flows very freely. The float was stuck, but I tore the carb apart and the float works fine now. I have the float bent so it won't shut the fuel flow off until the bowl is all but full.

Two things I have found. I did not pull the main jet out and clean it, and everything else was really hogged up so that might help. The other thing is the throttle body side of the carb was all bent up. I did my best to seal her up good when I put the carb back together, but could an air leak between the halves of the carb cause this?

Thanks for any help.

There is a screen inside the fuel inlet to the carburator. My guess is that the screen is plugged.

You have got to love those Allis Chalmers. Better yet it's great to hear that a guy gets his wife a Cub to mow with.

Check back on your post several times. Rudi will be on later. Inside Rudi's speel will be some links. One will be Carl Lunker's Carb fixes.

Welcome on board.

First, Image to the greatest forum on the internet, and to the Cub Family. You will find that all the folks on this forum are kind, helpful and just full of Cub info and knowledge. They also happen to be the finest folks I have ever met :!: :D

As Eugene so eloquently put it::::  :? 8)  Check back on your post several times. Rudi will be on later. Inside Rudi's speel will be some links. One will be Carl Lunker's Carb fixes.

Ok, so here is the spiel Image:

I would suggest that you read this thread: New Members and Visitors, Please READ Prior to Posting. There are many great links to informative pages such as the ATIS FAQ's 1 and ATIS FAQ's 2, The Best of H.L. Chauvin who has written very interesting articles on troubleshooting common problems with your Cub.

Also, you might want to visit the Cub Manual Server as there is tons of info on servicing, maintaining and re-building your Cub. In addition to this basic information, there are also a number of other useful tools available on the server. There is the Specialty Services page which has contact info for neat stuff like getting your seats recovered, buying quality Decals, Serial Number tags and a host of other neat items. Also there are the Parts Pages - both Used Parts Suppliers and New Parts Suppliers pages with links to quality dealers. I am always looking for YOUR favourite dealers for New and Used Parts to include here. These are intended to complement the businesses who support FarmallCub.com Website.

I would also recommend that you visit Binder Books and purchase the three most important manuals you can own for Maintenance, Repair and Rebuilding your Cub. These are the Owner's Manual, the GSS-1411 Service Manual and the TC-37F Parts Manual. Although they are available on the Cub Manual Server, it is better is you also have your own paper copy. Binder Books is the only Authorized IH Publication Reprint House and they have the best quality manuals available. Most other's are not of the same quality. Just a personal thought here, the I&T Shop Manuals, although helpful in some areas, really are not sufficient for the job. If you wish though, they are good additional reference works.

In addition to the above information, don't forget to check out the various articles that are available to help with your Repair, Restore, Rebuild or just your Maintenance Projects. There are a number of sub pages such as Electrolysis or Rust Zapper's, Maintenance Tips, Jigs and Techniques, Implement and Part Sketches and of course the Paint, Decals & Other Finish Questions which has the Paint Chart and the Paint Committee Decisions links.

I truly hope that you enjoy your Cub and that you will be a frequent contributor to the forum. Again, Image to the Cub FamilyImage :D

Since you are an Allis fan, I'll pick that cub up, and to show you how nice I am, I will only charge you for my gas, instead of full mileage. :P

here is the link to Carl's carb fixes
http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Mainte ... index.html

you also may wnat to check for fire to the plugs when it quits. your problem is most likely fuel, but may be ignition.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Sure sounds like fuel starvation, definitely check that screen in the carb's inlet...

Also, Lurker Carl's pages will give you the spec on how full the float bowl should be. Adjusting the carb is a bit of a pain at first but they work good afterwards.

Dad works days and I work nights at the same place. When I got to work today he came over to tell me the cub was running. "What did you do?"

He put the air cleaner back on. That's it?!?!?

My grandfather told him it sounded like an air leak, and when he said we were testing it without the filter on he said hook it back up, and it ran.

I obviously still need to go through all the proper setup, and one of the guys at work loaned me a shop manual, so I think we are going to be OK. Thanks for all the links. Believe it or not dad has an internet connected computer in the garage just for such an emergency.

I was going to get my wife one of those big umbrellas for on the tractor for mothers day, but that might be pushing my luck!

Thanks,
CHAZ

You know I don't even know how I talked her into it? Somehow I made it seem like her idea and she just went along with it. In my defense my wife is a teacher, so when the grass needs cut she is "unemployed" and I have to work. It sounds fair to me???

I can't use that excuse, I'm a teacher. But I do like your comment about letting it be her idea. I let her name the tractors.

I saw in your profile you teach history, I have a degree to teach social studies as well. My wife teaches music, as did her father, and my mom and mother in law both taught english, aint that a coincidence.

It's funny my dad actually gave me this tractor so my mom wouldn't find out he bought another one. Dad has about 2 DOZEN Allis's and I asked him if she would really notice. He said "I think she would notice one red one." I actually traded him a model C I restored, but I still got the better deal.

Dad and I are really going to dig into the old girl this weekend, I will let you know how we make out,
