Hi All,
I noticed that this place has both 6 and 12 volt tachs.
I would appreciate it if some of you wiser souls would check out this web link and let me know if you feel that any of their tachs would work well on my 1948 cub. I got the impression that they custom build tachs.

Thanks, Rick

cub tachometers ?
Rick,
If you have the origional magneto, You have to get a tach that works with the mag. Those are getting hard to find...
Here's a link that might explain things a little.

It is my understanding that the OEM cub tachs mechanically tied into the magneto (kind of like a spedometer on most older cars).
Since my original 1948 magneto does not have this opening, I am looking for an alternative.
I think that the tach shack folks may have a system that has an induction pickup on one of the spark plug wires.
Thanks

They sell two tachs that should work on the Cub, both 6 volts and 4 cylinders. The pictured tachs high reading is 6000 RPM.
If you are interest in these tachs, call the dealer and find out if the $149.00 plus S&H includes the wiring and sending units. You also need to find out where and how the sending unit is mounted.
You might ask them if the 1 year warranty is valid if the tach is installed on a farm tractor.
My opinion. I wouldn't invest in a tach for my Cub. It's also none of my business.

Given that the Cub's maximum RPM is around 1800, and most automotive tachometers read 6000 RPM or more, an automotive tach isn't going to tell you much beyond the fact that the engine is running.
If you can find a 3000RPM tach, that'd be better, as the OEM tachs could read up to 3000. At least the needle would move when the engine was running.
For those who are looking for an OEM-style tach, you can get a reproduction tachometer for a Farmall 340 for a little over $50 from several different vendors. It's the same body and mechanism. The only difference is the face plate, which is speed calibrated for the 5-speed transmission on the 340. What's cool is that 3 of the gears closely match the Cub's rated ground speeds (I think 1st, 2nd, 4th).
What I don't know is if the mechanical tach drive that installs in the distributor is still available from anywhere. I've got two cubs with the hole in the distributor drive, and mediochre fabrication skills, but if the tach drive is not available, there's no point in spending money on the tach.
