Four Position Switch Question

Postby Bob Grieb » Tue Jul 11, 2006 10:57 am

I bought an original four position light switch on ebay. The detents work but I am not sure how I can test it to verify it is functional. My Cub is a 1947 and the wiring was a mess so I discarded it. I plan on buying a harness from Brillman.
I want t overify that the swith works prior to installing it. I have a VOM but I do not know the switch circuitry.

Any ideas - Other than I should have purchased a known functional switch??? :D :D

Thanks

Bob

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Someone posted a picture of the back of the switch with connection info recently. Maybe they can repost it.

Bigdog

Thanks for the picture. I am not sure I can verify that the switch is good until final installation into the assembly but I did check for continuity between the Ampmeter post and the headlight and tailight posts.

From the Ampmeter post:
In one postion there is no continuity to either the taillight or headlight posts
In another postion there is continuity to the headlight post only
In another position there is is continuity to both headlight and tailight posts

This seems logical but this is my very first Cub so I do not know if that is how the switch is to function

Does that sound logical?

Thanks

Bob

I would replace any rusty screws as they will only give you trouble. Also I can't remember where(maybe someone will help me here) but somebody makes replacement resistors for the sw.

Thanks for the heads up. I notices when I was using the VOM that corrosion interferred with the reading.

with knob all the way to left, , and in the first posititon from left you should have no connection from ammeter connection to anything.

3rd position would be connection form taillight to ammeter and to head light from ammeter thropugh resiter, but that is such a low resistance you won't be able to tell it is there.

all the way to right will be same except not through resitor.

All the way to left, Ftetm reads to ground through resister on bottom. all other positions it reads directly to ground.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

The wiring diagrams on the FAQ show where the wires go on both style switches.

Jim:

Yes you are correct.. the wiring diagrams are there... but remember my friend..

there are those critters amongst us like me who DO NOT read wiring diagrams or schematics easily... give me a 40 sheet drawing to build and apartment building.. NOT A PROBLEM.. Do Not give me a small diagram with wiggly little lines that point to something but I am not sure what..... it IS BEYOND ME

That is why

is so darn useful :!: :!:
