grinding noise, occasional engaging. is the problem. Been rebuilt two times within the past 2 months, same place. EJP says problem is clearly illustrated in picture.

Looks like the bendix wasn't coming out all the way. Was it assembled correctly?

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

I am no genius at this but this is what I see:

1. Filings
2. The Spring looks split
3. the Bendix appears stuck
4. looks like the gears on the Bendix are getting chewed up..

course.. not knowing much about this stuff means little. All I know is what I have seen on 3 different starters. 1 old but working, 1 old and toast and 1 old and rebuilt - recently acquired.. and a big thank you to You Know Who You Are... :!:   :D :D :D

Can't fool the Big Dog :!: :!: :!: EJP states that there is supposed to be a thrust washer(?) at the north end of the shaft (mainly used as a spacer), as you can see in the pictures, the entire assembly moves up to 1/4 of inch, which allows TOO much slop, causing the grinding, the grrrrrring noise etc.

This starter (switched with stainless for obvious reasons) has always done it, so during the most recent rebuilds, the part apparently was never there. so back to the shop, in hopes they got an illustrated parts break down, to see if they can identify and order the apparently missing part.

The grinding of the teeth is occurring when the bendix throws it out, as it should but to much slop and the grrrrrrr bang, boom. 75% of the time. :( Hope they can determine what is missing. John

PS I am quite IMPRESSED!

PPS The birds will no longer be decorating my tractors or the interior of my barn for that matter.

P/N for the thrust washer is: 1 853 917. P/N for bird crap, unknown
If you take it back to the fella that rebuilt it, I would try to get him to replace the complete bendix drive.

A starter is a special type of electric motor. They are most efficient when the rotor (in this case, the armature) is aligned correctly within the stator (in this case, the field coils). The missing washer permits the armature to wander back and forth which hinders proper operation. Armatures which are shimmed too tightly suffer other problems, especially on motors that run for long periods of time. The rotor (armature) shaft gets longer as it expands from heat.
