Symptom:
With no load on the fast hitch-the TC raised the hitch with no problems.
Upon lowering the unloaded fast hitch, the engine went under a loaded
condition and seemed to "strain" to get the hitch down. Discussed this
earlier with Tom at TM Tractor and the CUB he tried did the same thing.
Question: Is this a "Normal" condition for the TC or do I need to look
for a blocked passage or sticking valve. I Currently have
the tractor in pieces for a restoration, so the TC overhaul
wouldn't be too big a deal, on the other hand, if this is normal
no sense in an unnecessary tear-down.
Thanks
Bill

This is one of those "may as well since I've got it all apart already..."
The official IH TC troubleshooting/maintenance guide is on Rudi's manual server.
It's my understanding that the TC will be faster in one direction due to the fact that the side of the cylinder with the shaft requires less hydraulic fluid. Pumping fluid into a completely open cavity vs. pumping into a partially filled cavity requires more fluid.
However, your engine shouldn't straaaaaaaaaain to do it. IMHO.

The tc unit has an internal retarder valve to limit downward travel due to implement weight. When there is no load on it you will notice the engine loading as it goes down. How much depends on sevearl things, such as type fluid, tmeperature, etc. It will strain less as the fluid warms and also when there is a load on the lift.
If it were mine and I were doign a complete rebuild on the rest of the tractor, I would go ahead and get the kit ( need number off tc block) and do a rebuild while you are at it. the internal orings, etc. will be worn, and may save a tear down in a year or two.

If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Touch Control
Thanks everyone for the responses. Looks like a "normal" situation, but
as John mentioned--good time for an overhaul--so will proceed with
due caution. Nice to know one is not starting an overhaul with a bad unit
though.
Dan, no helper spring but would be interested in one and what it would
take to retrofit to a '48 CUB. YES, that's right, mine has a retrofitted
fast hitch with the screw-type depth adjustment. Kinda neat!!
Thanks again to all for the info.

the touch controle with fast hitch should have some strain lowering the hitch. It is compressing the lifting assist spring . also all TC on the cubs will have some strain lowering. the check valve jet is smaller lowering than for the raising.. this is done purposly for lowering a heavy load. If it wasnt that way a heavy load will just drop.
