DMacV was looking into having some patterns made from a set that he has.

There ya go! Keep in mind that weights serve two purposes. Appearance and function. For a show tractor where it is only an appearance issue they could be cast from most anything. Aluminum would be easy because of the lower temperature required. (old storm doors, transmission housings, etc.) Lead would be even easier, although not as durable. Keep in mind that even aluminum would be heavier than concrete!

As far as appearance, IH and their customers weren't very concerned. ( A nice looking wheel weight casting is very rare.) :( Very large sand shifts, inclusions, and other defects easily passed inspection. Most any defect could pass for original as long as the casting was heavy. :?

I expect to see Dave tomorrow, and I will see if he has any further news to share on the state of the wheel weight project.

Please let us know as soon as possible. If he wants to sell his weights let me know. Machining a pattern may make a better looking part and be more durable. Brandon.

I have been thinking fiberglass -- put about 3 sets on. The bolts might outweigh the weights.

Hollow fiberglas and filled with sand, water or lead shot, LOL?
What about injection molded plastic with plug for filling with weight of choice?

I may not have been clear. We would machine a pattern out of aluminum with cast iron shrink , cast Iron wieghts , Only, so they wont have to be refreshed after many offs.

Bill,

If I understand it right, Phil's intention is, if there is enough interest, to make a proper pattern so cast iron weights can be cast by others. I think it's a good plan. Time will tell how it works out.

There's the matter of finding a good foundry with EPA approval. :(

At the prices weights are selling for on eBay there should be plenty of interest... but making a proper pattern isn't a small frivilous job. Fortunately, Phil has the talent and resources to do so. :D

If a list is being made to show interest I would like to be included. One of my second cousins is in Art School in Oklahoma City and he tells me they use old cast iron radiators for material.

All - Here's a place that might be able to do something. I talked to them awhile back about doing some Cub Cadet parts. I don't have the time right now to chase it down but for those that are pursuing casting the split weights, this may be an option.
