2 new problems with "Bette"

Postby John(videodoc) » Sun Oct 29, 2006 2:12 pm

You fix one problem, two new ones show up. :(
1. To get her started i had to remove the air intake hose to the carb. Once started, if i attempt to place back on, the govenor goes crazy and then she dies.

2. Slight fuel leak from compression fitting coming off the fuel strainer. Its as tight as can be? Should i have put telfon tape on those threads? Or do you suppose the pipe slipped out a bit as i was tightening.?

John - like David says - check the air cleaner for obstructions. Did you clean it while you had the hood off???? :D

On the gas leak - compression fittings seal by compressing the ferrule against the line and the inside of the fitting. Tape should not be necessary to obtain a seal.

Air Cleaner Question

Postby BIGHOSS » Sun Oct 29, 2006 10:05 pm

I have a air cleaner question. I have Uncle Bob's air cleaner off now, trying to clean it. It is now soaking in kerosene. How should I clean it more than that? Compressed air? How do you know when it is clean enough?

I soaked one in my parts cleaner for about a week. Rinsed it out until the fluid ran clean. Let it air dry.

1. Did i clean it when off? Well its a replacement air assembly. I didnt even think to soak it before i sent it out to paint. Guess i will be trying to get it off without removing hood, and soaking it. Dont want to have to remove that hood. (While we are here we might as well.......... nightmares come back to me.)

2. will remove gas line, put a little tape on, and make sure line is seated this time with tightening. alsmost looks as though the gas is coming out around the pipe itself.

Doc - there's no way that air cleaner is coming out without removing the hood. Shall we start making a list??????

Drop the reservoir cup and check the oil level in it. Also, check the top cap for obstructions since all the air has to pass through there. That mesh screen can close up from multiple coats of paint.

Doc,
As Bigdog said those gas line fittings seal with a ferrule and shouldn't need tape, I never had to put tape on any I have done. But !!! replace the ferrule with a new one when you take it off. They will leak if they have been tightened before and you re-use them. I think they were about 25 cents at NAPA

I think that if you try to replace the ferrule you will also be replacing the fuel line as the ferrule gets somewhat crimped on the fuel line.

Before I place a new ferrule and fuel line on the sediment bowl I use a spare brass fitting to set the ferrule in place on the fuel line. Once the ferrule is set then I will connect it to the bowl.

John, will it run if you leave the oil pan off the air cleaner, or if you take the precleaner ( top ) off?
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
