starter trouble

Postby tractard » Sun Nov 19, 2006 12:24 am

i got a 55 cub, and i'm having trouble starting it.The starter does'nt seam to have enough torque, sometimes it rolls the engine over slowly and sometimes it can't.I took it off, cleaned it up,tried it on the bench with a new battery and it worked.Put it back on the tractor and it still did'nt start.Any ideas? thanks richey

Couple of thoughts.

Clean up the tractor battery terminals and all connections.

Weak battery. Make sure your battery is fully charged. Fluid level in battery. I'm sure you have done that.

Do a voltage drop test for battery condition. Volt meter connected across the battery terminals. Crank the engine and watch (check) the voltage as you crank the engine. 12 volt system - if the battery voltage drops below 9.5 volts or so bad battery. 6 volt system 4.5 volts or so bad battery.

You can have the battery checked at most autoparts store.

Also check the ground connection to the tractor. Even if the battery terminals are in good shape there may be corrosion or rust where the ground (in this case the positve side of the battery) connect.

Be sure to observe the proper order on servicing batteries. If the fluid is low, add water to the proper level and then fully charge the battery. This sequence is important.
