generator testing

Postby capecodcub » Wed Nov 29, 2006 5:23 am

I just purchased a 6volt generator on ebay and am curious if there is a way to bench test it and check it's charging ability. I suppose I should just take it apart, replace brushes and do a general clean up on it. Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

I made a drill adapter so I can put sockets on my drill, I put a 5/8 deep socket on it and spun the pulley bolt. I spun it as fast as the drill would go, which would have been about full throttle on the tractor. Once you touch the leads of your voltmeter be ready! It really starts to turn hard! I am not sure of all the details but with that small amount of load it should read something like 30volts. I am sure someone with all the numbers will reply too. Good Luck 8)

If you connect a battery lead to the A termanil it should run like an electric motor. If it does it probably is good, though I would suggest checking the brushes.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

John,

Does the battery need to be 6 volt or not?

After "motoring" the generator as suggested above, it MUST be properly polarized before running the tractor. It is a good testing method.

I have a setup i made usind lower gen. bracket bolted to a piece of plyboard and an old washing machine moter on the other. I hook it up with gen and regulator to a battery in the floor. that way i can test and adjust as needed before i put it on the tractor. I will try and post pic tonight if time premits

You guys remind me that when I was a pup we uesed to start Model air plane engines with a starter. We put a spinner on the prop and pushed the spinner into a piece of hose on the end of an old starter. Worked fine and no sore fingers from back fire. Worked with both ignition and glow plug. Yes I am that old "before Glow plug"
