Enough power??

Postby capecodcub » Sun Dec 03, 2006 5:51 am

Can you guys let me know if the Cub shoudl be able to start from a standstill in 3rd gear? Trying to determine whether I need to dig into my governor a little bit. Also my throttle quad. will only operate in the 2nd half of it's stroke. I probably need to take it all apart and readjust all of it.

Mine does it pretty easily, but it does tend to give the clutch somewhat of a pasting, so I'm careful when and where I do it. Also, when I start off with the mower in gear, I release the clutch at very low RPM's--when it's completley engaged I then rev it up.

No problem starting in third, but I do find it easier on the clutch if you start at part throttle, not wide open. Just a little above idle works good ost of the time.

I would think so since the Cub has a nonsynchronised transmission, going from gear to gear while on the move will not work well with out synchros. Both my Cubs will start out in 3rd on the level ground, but with any hint of an incline it will stuggle and probly stall.

Hi Capecodcub

I would say mine starts out easier in 3rd than second with the woods 42 engaged. Of couse I generally start out at 3/4 throttle.

a sign of how good of condition the motor is is how easy it starts out in third gear.
just of of idle going up a slope then bring it to the cub tug!
if it has to be rolling downhill with full throttle and still not really wanting to do it then rebuild it.

I can take of just fine in 3rd gear, not much slipping of the clutch needed either.

3rd gear

Postby capecodcub » Sun Dec 03, 2006 3:23 pm

I guess my Cub is just fine then. It will take off fine on the level in 3rd and even will climb a slight incline in 3rd if I am already moving. ANd I can even shift into 3rd while moving so all is good! Thanks for all the replies.

My Cubby willl start in 3rd, and go on the flat and level. I thought it was way down on power, but from what you all are saying, maybe she is doing pretty well. It takes a lot of clutch slipping, and a bit of push on the throttle lever, but she's done it to go down the street several times.

I have not had any luck with the governor adjustment yet, but I will tackle that when I can.

David Just a thought- if the engine just flat out dies on a third gear start it may be just a simple carb adjustment. Try playing with the main jet adjustment quarter turn at a time . Try the simple remedys first.

Nothing heroic has been done to any of my Cubs, but often at shows I cruise at idle in 3rd gear... far below walking speed. Sometimes when it's the tricycle I'm carrying a passenger or several. The Dotson brothers often are riding along. We got in trouble at the Portland show one time for doing it with 7 people... two on a sulky. Trike's engine is just a simple old baler engine. :)

Dave, mine starts in 3rd without problems and at idle or just above. No problems with the clutch and it seems to have plenty of power.
