It shouldnt matter where any of the timing gears are for the mag to snap or not. If its not snapping at all then there is something inside there that is broken or worn. You can make it trip on the bench.

If the governor is not timed correctly the mag will not trip when static timing as per the manual. I suspect the governor timing is off by at least one tooth.

The mag trips fine on the bench. And I checked it for spark.
I had the wire from the coil almost an inch away from the sparkplug.....it shot a nice spark all the way.

Because I removed the govenor w/o taking the necessary precautions regarding lining everything up.......I guessing the govenor is off....like Donny has said.

OK Donny. I'm having another "stupid" moment. If the governor is driven by timing gears, are you saying the mag won't turn at all if the governor timing is off??? If it spins at all, even if it's out of time, shouldn't the mag snap, even if it's snapping at the wrong place, like Nik suggested???

Yes the impulse will still trip, just not at the right time. If the governor timing is off the mag will not trip using the normal static timing method unless the mag is rotated past the given adjustment hole. It was my impression that this was Kirks dilemma.
Sorry, I should have been more clear

I think you're going to have to break down and pull the governor again. They say 2 and 8 o'clock... You might be at 1:30 and 7:30, or 2:30 and 8:30, and that would be enough to mess up the impulse trip, I'd imagine. One tooth off, it might LOOK okay, but no trippy, no sparky....

If it "popped" & "back fired" my guess is that you're off 180 degrees with your Magneto.

Country,

If that was the case, being off 180 degrees, wouldn't I just need to reposition the rotor?

If so, I did that with no results......unless the rotor is only a tooth off (give or take a tooth either way)?

The rotor needs to be timed to the rest of the magneto. The rib on the rotor needs to line up with the marked (notched) tooth of the little drive gear. You need to reset the rotor then start over doing the timing.

Jim,

And what about the gov....does it need to be re-aligned first?

Kirk,

If you're in doubt about the governor timing, the only way to make sure it's correct is to pull the seal and align the timing marks on the idler and the governor. These will be single punch marks on the mag side of each gear. The punch mark on the idler is between the teeth and the mark on the governor drive gear is aligned with a tooth. Look close, the marks can be very hard to see. This is really the only way to make sure it's timed correctly.
You can however move the governor one tooth at a time and you may get lucky.
As Jim said, make sure the mag is timed correctly, you can not correct your problem changing the timing of the rotor.

I was about to post exactly what Donny said. You need to correct the rotor position whether the governor is currently in time or not. On the governor timing, quit guessing. Pull the seal out and check the marks. You need to turn the engine to TDC on compression on cylinder 1 for the marks to be seen.
