Just found a Cub right under my nose!

Postby CTdave » Sun Jan 14, 2007 7:33 pm

****Update: I just started my own file. CTdave (on the last page of user galleries)****

I recently got into Cobs & purchaced a 1948. I was just thinking about a red tractor sitting in front of a Balducci's country market down the road. It's been there for 12-15 years & I drive by it every day. Well, I went over today & sure enough it's a Cub. It's one with the metal emblems & it has all sorts of attachments. There are chain drives & sprockets & all sorts of plowing divices under it. Though the paint is fair, it's rusting in various spots. I'm going to see the manager tomorrow & see if it could be bought. I might mention that it is leaking oil and poses an enviromental health issue which could get them shut down (hehehe). It's owned by a chain store & the current owner bought the property a bout 4 years ago.

So I went & talked to the manager today. I said "so when would you like me to pick up that old tractor out front?" He said they are looking to get rid of it but the best offer they have had was $700.00. He said if I made a reasonable offer, he would talk to his corporate headquarters. I offered $1000. & he said "that will probably work" & that he would call me in a couple of days. I hope I didn't offer too much  .
Aside of the hood & tank area rusting along the bottom, everything looks good. I have no idea how the engine is though. Worst case scenario, how much would I be looking at for a running engine?
I will get my camera & take some pics tomorrow.

Hey CT Dave...At $1000.00 you're still doin' O.K. (even if the Cub doesn't start right up. You git it home for $1,000.00...then attach some photos here, and we'll all help you git her runnin' again right quick like !

***UPDATE***I just uploaded some pictures in my photo gallery. CTdave (on page 8 of the user galleries).

The only real visible problem is around the base of the fuel tank. It's rusted pretty bad. Other than that, when the guy calls me back I'm going to go over with my hand crank off my 48 & see if the engine is free. If not, I'll have to do a major price reduction on my offer.
So, what can you guys tell me about this one? I'm new at this. Sorry I couldn't get better pictures but the shrubs & grass is pretty high around it.
Thanks, Dave

Dave - your pictures show what appears to be a 58 to 63 era cub (if grille and hood are original). with most of a set of cultivators. Condition seems decent visually but the real question is how is it mechanically? Assuming it is not locked up but does not run you could adjust your offer down a little. Possibly $800 or so should be reasonable. If you like the tractor and can get it for somewhere near that price or at least between that and $1000 it could make a real nice project.
The bottom line is if it is worth it to you then buy it. The only thing that matters is that the buyer and seller must be happy with the deal. it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Hey, David... I've been reading your posts & been enjoying every one! Your enthusiasm is great. I loved the line about the oil leak and the "environmental health issue shut down" - absolutely classic. You must be in sales or negotiations.

I'm also thinkin' Bigdog is on the right scent. Kit
