Final Drive Curiosity Question

Postby JimT » Sat Sep 22, 2007 9:03 pm

I have a curiosity question. Why would someone want to drill and tap the final when there is already a hole in the final for filling the final?

This photo shows that the final has been drilled and tapped. :? I seen this in a post by Dave.

In this photo the fill hole is under the bracket that is bolted to the final. You can see the top of the fill plug. This was in one of Geroge's posts.

Just curious why this would be done.

Easy, so you don't have to take the brackets off.

Duh, why didn't I think of that.   But then, you wouldn't have to fill the final that often.

I'd rather unbolt the hitch myself!

The spilled fluid in the floor is easy to prevent Rudi. .... Do it outside in the yard. :bellylaugh:

That would work.. then the tractor trailers can track it down the road and I won't need CaCl on the road to keep down the dust... :big smile:

I never even tought of it till I saw the added plugs on Gabby. If a short pipe nipple were screwed into the threads and the right increaser, etc. added it should be possible to add the lube without making any mess at all. I like the idea.

Maybe the PO didn't know about the fill hole. Personally, I've never used the fill hole on a regular Cub. While the pan is off I just fill it to about 1 inch from the top and carefully bolt it back on. CAUTION: This method doesn't work on a Lo-Boy. :big smile:  And before anyone asks, no, I didn't find that out the hard way. :spinning:
