Cub Horn ???

Postby Kodiak » Tue Sep 25, 2007 9:19 pm

I been looking for a cub horn ever since Rudi's computer died during a e-bay auction  I guess I just got caught up in seeing if I could find a horn or at least one like what was used by IH.
The 2 below came from a wrecking yard buddy of mine, one off a old IH truck ( not much left of that truck :!: ) and the other came off a 69 Chevy Impla.

The chevy horn (black one) looks just like the one Jamie posted a while back. The primered one looks like what I think I saw on some older cubs photo's some time ago.....
Anyone have some info on whether IH had a early version of a horn and then a later?

The horn button I've had forever, don't know where it came from, probably off a old chevy truck :D

Thanks
Ron
I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.

The photos I've seen were similar to the primered one.

As Ron implied.. my computer had a bad case of diabetes.. and then died just a few minutes before the end of the auction. Like an idiot, I was playing the anit-snipe game and should have just bid as I have since learned to do.

I am kicking my butt, because it was a great IH horn complete with the IHC logo.. which would have been perfect. I have a pic of it somewhere. I have since been searching on eBay trying to find an IH 6 Volt Horn, but they are never listed that way. So a generic :eBay: 6 Volt Horn search has proved most effective.

So far I have been able to acquire 2 of the primered style horns, but they are from a 1956 Pontiac if I remember correctly. They are 6 volt and in good shape. Nothing a little TLC and a wire wheel won't cure :!:  Will have to find the pic if I saved it. It is no longer on eBay.

I really would like to find the correct horns and the correct buttons. I am assuming that the correct mounting position for the button is on the steering column where or close to where George has his mounted? Maybe George will post the pic again  :!: :!:

Rick:

I had forgotten about that particular brochure.. I see the horn and assume it is attached via a bracket to the dog legs? And the Horn Button is above the Throttle Quadrant on the Steering Column?

I would sooner think the horn was attached to one of the steering shaft seal retainer bolts.

There's a good one in Updikes second book, that all original yellow cub that's in there has a horn. He has a good picture of the horn button location.

Ron:

It looks like the chevy style is more closely related to Jamie's. I am wondering if anyone who is going to be at Cub-a-rama could get some real close ups and see if there is any IH markings on it at all, or if they are just the Delco standard horn. If so then that would go along with the Delco genny's and starters.. and makes some sense. Volume purchase even back then was a good avenue.

Thoughts?

If it turns out to be a standard Delco 6 volt horn, they should not be all that hard to come by. We will need good pics of the other parts so they can be fabricated or NAPA part numbers maybe... :!: :?:

both of those horns would be neat on a cub. The horn on my cub is off of a model T truck, original. That thing takes up all the empty space underneath the hood! :)

That would be nice if someone could get pictures of the button assembly and the horn bracket?
The bracket for the horn looks simple enough, and from the picture, could probably cobble up something easily from the picture alone. The button bracket looks pretty easy to make as well, but a picture of the back of it would be nice? I think I have a source for that style button from an electronics warehouse here near the base.
