1947 cub painting question

Postby Greg Corn » Tue Oct 23, 2007 4:16 pm

I just had my gas tank boiled and lined inside to hopefully help with the rust problem on the inside of my tank. I plan on having the tractor painted in the near future. (The hood is down to the bare metal and off the tractor). Once the tractor is painted, it would be returned to an unheated pole barn. My question, should I wait till Spring to have it painted or go ahead and have it done in Nov. or prior to xmas? i/e would the paint possibly not adhere properly if it is returned to the barn? Should I just prime the hood for the winter? Thanks for your advice and any other suggestions you might have! I also wanted to say thanks to the folks who hosted the Central Indiana cubfest in August. I received a lot of good advice. Greg C

primer should be painted as soon as you can. it will absorb moisture and cause rust or you could use an epoxy primer. epoxy seals the metal against the moisture.

I prime everything as soon as it's bare metal, pretty happy with Duplicolor primers (rattle can). They have an etching primer (green) too. Finish coat should have no trouble 'curing' over the winter, but I am not too wise about such things.

Greg,

I agree with everyone else. PRIME it right away. Flash rust will come along real fast. I would prime it, then paint it red in the spring. Good Luck.
