Generator belt size

Postby Super A » Sun Dec 09, 2007 9:59 am

All,

I think this was just in another thread but I cant' remember for sure. What size Gates, etc. belt will sub for the generator belt on my '49 Cub with generator with the relay on top? Mine disintegrated and I'm trying to save a trip by picking up one locally....

I tried to use a 4L22 on my tractor (NAPA part number) and it was too long to allow adjustment of the Generator. IIRC, a 4L20 will not fit over the fan (please correct me if I am wrong). I think that a 4L21 (if such a part exists) will be "just right"...

Again, correct me if I am wrong!

General V-belts and automotive type V-belts sometimes are very different. The general types have much less heat resistance. On one of my Cubs, one of the 4L21 belts burned up in less than a hour. The automotive type that I used after that is now at least 10 years old. No need to mention the problem involved in changing one.

My wifes uncle is a big boss with Gates and he is also the one I bought my cub from and he gave me new belts and hoses when I got the tractor.
One belt number is 6821 and I believe that is the generator belt and the other one is TR24315 and that should be the fan belt.
He also gave me 3' of hose of each size. I doubt that I will ever need that much hose since the lower hose is only like 2" long

I found them cheaper from TM than from NAPA. OEM too!
