head question "what is this?"

Postby Clem » Mon Jan 14, 2008 5:54 pm

I found this piece of rod in my engine head. It was rolling around in there. It is exactly 12" long and has a ball on one end and a small bend on the other. I have no idea how it could have gotten in there or why. What is it?

I'm sure I don't know, but there's got to be a great story on how it got there...

The funny is thing is guys, I dropped a tap into the water jacket earlier last week, and spent a couple hours digging it out.

Dan - was this in the head or the water jacket of the block?

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Possibly a leftover piece of webbing from the casting process.

This reminds me of when I etched out the gas tank on my 55 cub. While sloshing the tank I heard a noise. First a small piece of a tree limb about 8 inches long came out, then a bulb from a small flashlight and finally the battery from the flashlight. I'm sure whoever did that learned a few new colorful words.

My guess. A stick to break up or probe for any sand remaining from the casting process - after the vibration process. Or to check that there was not a breakdown of the sand during the casting process - to make sure that the passages were open.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Is there a prize, like a hat or a "Pee on JD" decal or something.  Maybe even an old typewriter (sorry Jeff)

I like Bigdog's guess.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I know! I know! It is the magic stick that converts the C-60 to a 20 HP powerhouse. I saw a Cub for sale on Tractorhouse.com and the owner said it was 20 HP, and this magic stick has to be the part that does the conversion.

Carefully put it back just the way you found it. After a complete tuneup you will be amazed at the performance of your Cub.

Now... About that ocean-front property in Arizona. Have I got a deal for you!

If you look closely I had to break the rod into three pieces to get it out of the head, since it is 12" long and the outlet hole was so small. I have to almost conclude that it has been in there from the start. The rod was not bent at all. It makes you wonder what else is in these things?
