PTO shaft pilot wear questions

Postby hschwartz3 » Sat Feb 16, 2008 1:33 am

Well I was playing around in the garage this evening and decided to address the wobble in my PTO shaft. (Uh wait, this is coming out all wrong)

I figured the bearing had failed and cut into the PTO shaft causing the play. However, when I pulled the PTO assembly it was obvious all the wear was at the clutch end of the shaft. I imagine this was caused by too much belt tension applied by the previously mounted sickle bar mower.

I have posted some pics below of mine and borrowed some from TM's website to use as a comparison.

Is there suppose to be a bushing here? It looks like one in TM's picture.

Does anyone know what the size of the pilot recess is in the end of the trans/clutch drive shaft?

My PTO shaft pilot cut down versus TM's. Anyone know it's true size.

I'm trying to determine how worn the rear of the drive shaft is. Thanks for your help.

BTW, the bearing turned out to be OK, but will be replaced regardless.

Definitely need a new shaft, that's almost the worst one I ever saw. The worst was on the '58 that was my dad's old tractor. It wobbled so bad that someone had actually welded the pulley to the shaft to keep it on.

I figured I would just get the kit from TM. I'm starting to wonder about the PTO clutch now. I went out and looked at it again, it appears fine, but I would almost expect there to be some where there as well.
Is the PTO shaft made of softer material?

Herb
