Don't forget you are going to spend an entire day driving to and from the Cub also. Is it worth the drive time and gas? If you're serious you better take the trailer along.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Go low $ I would offer $700.00. If I was selling a cub you better believe I would make sure it was running before I showed it.

When I look at a Cub running does not matter to me. Whether or not it actually runs, I consider them all non running as generally the situation you have there they almost always need at the least a complete tuneup and more times than not after its home you will find all kinds of patched up repairs and things that aren't quite right anyway. So just negotiate a bottom line price and go from there.

Since it costs you $75 each time you go there -- take the trailer next time. BUT, assuming that you have his phone number, do some talking first.

Since it spins over ok, there is a good chance that there is no big problem.

Hey, what's up with the tie rods, I don't recall seeing anything like that before. Almost looks like some set-up for towing (the tractor) or pulling something while backing up. Maybe some of the major cub guys will comment.

I think that $1100 really means $1000 and that is fair, but $750 or $800 would be better.

Oh, and by the way if you can't get him on the phone, take the trailer and leave it at a gas station several miles away while you guys talk.

What is this tractor to become? Parade, or field worker? Front tires do not match. It is up to you what your pocketbook will allow. Go with the 800 and see what he says. I would also try to work in central air, but thats just me!! lol

Mine a 54 had sat outside for a number of years. I had to change every bearing and seal in it and now its a nice tractor. With a rotted floor board I can see five hundred in parts easy. The more I do this hobby the more I like barn kept tractors. I would say 800 is plenty. Mike

Thanks, Thanks everyone for your replies. This information will help me decide what to do.
Yes the mower deck stays on it and it looks to be in real good shape. I asked about the cultivators and he said all he had of them was on the tractor. He did say the previous owner had the cub for about 20 years and that he may have the rest of the cultivators.
I'm not sure about that front tierod. I thought it looked a little different. Those two brackets extending are attached to the axle clamps. We could not figure out what they could have been used for.
I am going to call him and offer him 800.00 as it sits. And tell him if he gets it running we can talk after I get there and drive it out, and check with the PO about the rest of the cultivators.
Again, I appreciate all of the replies.

I would bet that after sitting for a year, the gas is bad & the carb is gummed up. That is the simple fix. Don't get too emotional over a cub which is in "pretty good shape" but not running which is 200 miles away. I have been cought up in the "have to have it" mess too many times. Do a little digging, there are more out there.

Interested to see how this deal turns out...or not! I also have some funny brackets on the front end of Black Cat...she's been in the family for 3 generations now, and no one seems to remember what they were for, if anything! Maybe a home-made blade, that's the best guess I have for mine, and there was supposed to be a blade that went with Black Cat...that we never found. Good luck!

Looks like about an 800 dollar tractor to me. I have seen them go in that condition with the mower for 1000 bucks. Looks like Someone has tried to work on it before and it's been kind of abused. Why would you put a stel plate over the driver's platform? From the look on the deck the rear main seal is leaking a lot of oil too. I have learned that you can get way more in these things than they are worth. It's better to start with a good one anyhow, they are everywhere. I looked for about 6 months, found one was one owner and that has never been apart, abused, screwed around with and was serviced by a dealer every year. A real cream puff. They are out there. If it is not running than either the owner doesn't want much for it (deal) or is trying to hide something. Just my two cents.

I think I mentioned this a couple weeks ago, I went to a farm sale and they had a fairly nice Cub there with cultivators. They couldn't get it to run. Said it was out of gas but the gas pouring out the carb told me different..... The thing STILL brought $2200!! The auctioneer did guarantee it would run, but if she won't start on cue, that's a price reduction or a deal breaker for me.....

Just wanted to move this back to the top again, since I got so many replies, opinions and help on this Cub.
When I left there last week he said he would get it running, move the old car sitting behind it (with 4 flat tires) so we could get it out of the shed and test it out. I have called him several times, to see if it's ready, and everything still sits as we left it. He tells me that he just don't have the time to get to it. And still tells me that I can come down and get it going if I want. But that is a 200 mile drive with a lot of unknowns. Something is just not right about this. I am now not sure that he WANTS to sell it.
But before I hung the phone up today I did ask him if he would take $800 for it the way it sits. The answer was "no, must have $1100".
So I am going to PASS on this one.
But, I do appreciated everyone's interest, opinions and help.

perk- You are probably doing the right thing. Somethings just not right about it. He wants YOU to come get it running? I don't think so. If it were me, I'd let him sit on it for a while (maybe a couple months) and call him back to see if he's changed his mind on the $800. Can't hurt.

My cousin asked me once where he could get copies of 3 month old newspapers. I told him he could get them at the library as they could be had on microfilm after a certain point. I asked why and he said he was looking for a good deal on a boat and he wanted to call some people that had tried to sell and had given up. After a few calls he found exactly what he was looking for at the right price.
