Powder coating on rims

Postby redfin » Mon Mar 10, 2008 6:01 pm

A local gentleman that does powder coating gave an estimnate of 75 to 100 dollars to coat all 4 Cub rims including centers , if they are clean (already blasted)when he get them. This is to do them the red and silver.

My question :?:

Is there a reason not to powder coat them?

I think for the price it is a good deal, but tell me what you think.

There is no reason not to coat them. The rims look really sharp when powder coated and that is a good price.

There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Jim,
The only reason not to powdercoat them is color match when you get the inevitable chip, ding, or scratch.
I had my rear rims only powder coated for $25 each including blasting, phosphate primer, silver color coat, and clear coat, plus shipping both ways.
R & B Powder Coat in Illinois.
VideoDoc gets a lot of stuff done by them.

That's a good deal :!: I would be all over that. Power coating is the way to go.

I have been told that powder coating will not hide pits, dings and other blemishes, but may in fact highlight them. Is this true? Before powder coating old rims, should you metal prep with high-build primer or even body filler?

because of the baking process, you can not do a lot of prep work, as it will melt away. The pitting will show, but what powder coating process actually in my opinion fills them in somewhat. I am very happy with the results, and have some pits on my trailer queens.

I called R & B Powder Coat in Chicago and was told by a guy named Tom that they don't do small quantities. Called a place in the area (Baton Rouge Powder Coating) and was told by a guy named Jody it would cost around $700 to coat 2 rear rims, 2 front rims, and 4 rear wheel weights. This includes blasting, powder primer (grey), and a color coat (silver, red, and white for the various parts). If anyone knows a place in the Baton Rouge, NewOrleans, Hammond area that can do the job for a more reasonable price please let me know. I'm not ready to fork out that much cash, yet. I'd probably be willing to drive a little further if necessary.

Not sure, but that don't sound like the correct information from R&B.

you need to go to rudi's manual server
http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Specia ... index.html
and look up under powder coating and you will find them. Talk to Rick. You will get the price of $125 for all four including centers. blasting included.

John

four rear weights will be about 100 i am guessing.

I was at the local pickup truck aftermarket store to get some Bullring tie down rings and noticed that he does powder coating. When asked about doing Cub rims, he said that he did not care what it was. The price was $85 to fire up the oven and whatever powder is used. I described the front and rear rims and he reckoned it would be "about $125, give or take".

If there are any shops that cater to the off-road jacked-up pickup bad-guy wannabe's, check with them for powder coating. And/or contact your nearest auto/motorcycle speed shop. You might also want to consider looking at Eastwood (http://www.eastwoodco.com/) for powder coating at home. But you will probably have to buy your own oven or start being a single man again.

Rick

That is a good deal sounds like. Just a note: My son does small ATV parts in of all things a large toaster oven. It works wonderfully but are limited by size of coarse.
