Choke Rod length vs. Starter Pull rod length?

Postby VinnieNC » Tue Mar 25, 2008 9:57 am

I have the choke pull rod and starter pull rod from a 1947 cub. The problem is that I don't know which is which. I don't have the whole tractor, just parts and pieces and I don't know of anyone with a cub that I could measure them. Can someone please tell me which one is longer or shorter or a way to tell them apart?

Thanks!

-Vinnie

I think the started rod is shorter than the chock rod. Because the way they are positioned on the tractor. If not someone else will chime in to correct me.

Vinnie: I took measurements on a Cub and got the following lengths: Choke=29 1/2 and Starter= 25 1/2. Both rods were straight. Dan

Starter rod lengths

Postby Steve K. CALIF » Tue Mar 25, 2008 10:43 am

Maybe someone could verify this, does the starter rod come in two different lengths based on the early tractors with the Long actuator lever on the starter vs. the later ones with the Short actuator lever??

I don't know if the length was any different, but the early long arm used a straight rod (as Dan described) and the later short one used one with a bend (as in Mike's second picture).

Let me explain a little more on choke and starter rods on my Cub, actually Barnyards Cub now. The choke rod measured 29 1/2 inches, the starter rod which was present measured 31 inches. But the starter rod was so long that it extended seven inches beyond the dash half way to the arm which supports the steering shaft and steering wheel. I have a loose short starter rod, 25 1/2 inches long. I assumed that a po had installed choke rods on both the choke and starter. When I place the 25 1/2 inch starter rod in place it is just long enough to reach from the starter through the dash. But if starter rods come in two lengths, maybe a po installed a long starter rod on the starter when it really needed a short one. I believe that I have you sufficiently confused at this point so I will close. Dan. Having given this some thought, a long vs short actuator lever on the starter might make, at most, a difference of one inch in the length of the starter rod. Certainly not 6-7 inches. Has to be choke rod on both choke and starter. Dan

Two lengths starter rod

Postby Steve K. CALIF » Tue Mar 25, 2008 1:13 pm

I just checked TM Tractor's site for the starter rod and found he lists two different starter rods.
One for long lever types, s/n 128798 and below.
One for short lever types s/n 128799-22400, and lo-boy 18700 and below.
He didn't show the lengths of these rods.
