Re: 6 volt + ground question
Mine is grounded in the bottom of the battery box mount bolt. I think this is right.

Re: 6 volt + ground question
thanks. i was thinking the same. I have saw others grounded to shift plate, floor pan, and axel tube . i thought battery box is most logical. Jim

Re: 6 volt + ground question
Originally, there was a short wire that actually screwed to the side of the battery box. Out on Rudi's server, there is a link to "BigDog's Demonstration of Battery Cable Routing" that shows how he set up the ground strap to the bottom of the b-box in one of the mounting holes for the box...
Right now, Merlin(cub)'s ground is via three #12 black wires and is bolted to the steering post mounting screw. That is on my list of things to change...
Now, where did I put my "tuit" collection... I know that there is a round one in there... Oh heck...I will just have to get to the store and buy one so I can get a ROUND TUIT...
Hope this helps! (well...not the sarcasm)...

Mine is bolted to the side of the battery box at the top. It has worked fine.

Re: 6 volt + ground question
Mine was not original battery cable but the way the previous owner did it was kind of neat. He ran the positive battery cable out of the box and to the closest bolt on the steering column support. This provided a good ground on the torque tube and onto the engine. The positive battery clamp had a small pig tail that he ran to the battery box so that the work light had a good positive ground too. The battery cable looked sort of like this one.

Re: 6 volt + ground question
Here is the way mine is grounded. Make sure you have a good connection between the box and the tractor. I scraped off the paint where the four battery box bolts bolt to the tractor to get a good clean connection.

Nice job JimT, and I believe that is the way they show it in all the manuals.

My beef about this ground connection is both ends of that ground cable have to come off before the battery can be removed. That nut and bolt prevents the battery from being lifted over the front lip of the box! BTW, you've done a beautiful job, Jim.

Re: 6 volt + ground question
Beautiful job Bob. Mine is a working tractor (ie rusty) If I tried that I would have no ground with my rusty coming apart battery box and rotted bolts holding the box to the axel tube. I have mine grounded (postitve ed?) to the shifter plate. And that is working good for me.

Re: 6 volt + ground question
Well, there are two ways to look at it... "Original" or "get the job done". Originally, they were done like Jim T's tractor, but in order to get the job done and get a good ground, bolting a heavy enough wire to ANY bolt on the tractor will work. One exception comes readily to mind... Don't hook the ground AND the hot lead to the terminal on top of the starter or the generator...

Nice job! This is exactly the set up we have. How about a flat low profile head bolt with the head on the inside? Might solve the battery removal issue?

I did that when I bought the new cables and I can remove the battery withour removing the strap
