valve guide removal tool.

Postby sgtbull » Mon Nov 17, 2008 12:08 pm

I posted about making a tool to remove my old valve guides and put new ones in. I had several inquiries about making the tool for folks who want one, and I figured I could do that fairly easily. It's not a big deal, just takes about 20 minutes on a lathe, turning a good grade bolt down to the proper size. What would be a fair price to ask for such a tool? I'm not out to skin anyone by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't want to be inundated w/ requests by folks who would re-sell them at a much higher price. (My goal is to help out the restorers, not the guys selling tools to them, and maybe, make a little "tractor cash" for parts and pieces on MY tractor:)
What do you think? $10.00 to high?
I've never met a tractor I didn't like....but I have found some that were greatly annoying....

Just my thoughts. I don't think you will sell very many. Valve guides are not that often replaced. You probably should search this site and see how many individuals have replaced the valve guides themselves.

You might contact KubKraft and some of the advertisers on the board and see if they would handle - sell a few.

Well, I really wouldn't expect it would be a big demand item either, but if a few folks could use one, it might pay for a new clutch disc or something similar for MY project. :) I don't want to go into "production" of them, just turn out a few now and then, and I'd have to agree with you, there surely can't be that many folks using them. I'm just trying to get a feel for what would be fair, inasmuch as I have had a few inquiries...I kinda thought $10 would be decent.. shoot it'll cost me about a buck for the bolt, and probably 2-3 dollars to ship it, so I get 6 or 7 dollars out of one. I sell 10 of 'em, I got a new throwout bearing! ( and will probably have saturated the market by then.)

At that price, I would be interested in one. It may be a long time before I use it, but sure would be cheaper than having a machine shop do it. You need to make sure that your time is compensated for what you think its worth too.

Kelley,

Per our phone conversation: $10 seems to be a fair price for a one of a kind tool.
Since it worked so well for you, seems like other Cubbers would be interested in obtaining one.

Thanks for sharing this info and for making the tool available.

Looks like you have four sold already. Not bad.

As far as the price. $10- would be fair.

Well, I probably ought not be hawking wares on this forum.... Anyone who is interested in one, drop me a line on my regular email, sgt.bull@att.net and I'll get in touch with you. I'll start cranking them out tomorrow.

Kelley:

5 so far and if you check your PM's, I think you will find #6 there too :big smile: I like the idea. Oh one thought, every tool/product that I have ever purchased from any member of this forum has been of superior quality and holds a special place in my tool box. Yours will be no exception.

Thanks for the shot at getting one.

This thread is from 2008. You might try creating a new post asking about a valve guide removal tool for your Regular.
