Testing Generator Output
What is the procedure for testing a generator, still mounted on the tractor, using a voltmeter

Bud - You can check the output by measuring the voltage from the generator armature terminal to ground or you can measure this across the battery terminals. Nominal battery voltage of a 6 volt battery is just a little over 6 volts. Generator output is usually around 7 to 7 1/2 volts. To remove the regulator from the equation, ground the field terminal of the generator. This puts only the generator into the system.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.
