Is it normal for the ammeter to show a discharge condition when the engine and generator are at very low rpm No lights on ect. As soon as the rpm's are increased it will show a charge. I'm just getting used to doing things backwards +- -+ never messed with a generator before let alone + ground.
Give me 800 MHz any day.

Donny, it's not unusual for a system to show zero or negative charge at idle. If you have a 3 brush generator, you can easily adjust the output.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

We're all spoiled with alterrnaters in our cars and trucks today. I remember when I got my first car a 1936 Chevy in 1950 Generator and regulator problems came up all the time. The 36 plymouth, 36 ford and 38 plymouth like wise

How about that! My first car was in 1950, but it was a '37 Chevy. It had a cutout, not a regulator. Problems aplenty in that era.
