Substitute Drawbar and Gear Reducer?

Postby Bigschuss » Fri May 14, 2010 12:50 pm

Found a nice Howard Rotavator last summer with all of the parts. Last night I went to attach my belly mount blade under my '58 Fast Hitch and realized that I can no longer use my standard length substitute drawbar while the gear reducer is in place?

Does anybody know if there is a source for a longer substitute drawbar that will work with my gear reducer before I have one fabricated?

Thanks in advance,
Blair

Blair - I'm pretty sure you will need to have one made.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Thanks Bigdog. Yeah, I think you might be right. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Blair. I'd rather make the final extension that should've came with the unit, along with the brake pedal and fender extensions. Hopefully EJP will show his pics when sees this. Here's a small pic from TM: http://www.tm-tractor.com/gbrochures/ho ... torcd6.htm

Here is a picture of an original drawbar spacer, which is needed for any implement that mounts to the final drive, there should be 2 sets, one on the front and one on the rear of the final drive.

and a picture of the ones Rick made for me. I have it dismounted at present, preparing to switch tractors as soon as I get the 48 I am rebuilding done so I can get better pictures if you wish.

I also just found this old pic of a spacer I made a few years ago for Tom or Norman(don't remember), to match an original, to give you alittle better close-up picture.

Just make your spacer exactly the same width as the reducer unit and the drawbar should line up perfect.

Thanks for those pics Rick and John. Glad I started this thread, because I now see the spacer that I am SUPPOSED to have. As you can see, the one that I got from the guy I bought the unit from obviously had some kind of a homemade spacer. I never knew any better. I was never thrilled with it.

I also now see that yes, instead of a longer drawbar, I can simple use another spacer. Don't know why I didn't think of that.

Rick, I'm going to send you a private message with some questions if you don't mind.

Thanks again,
Blair

I have mine on Hot Rod so I can take some pics tomorrow for you. I copied the same setup as EJP since I ran into the same problem that you have. I wanted a belly mount blade but couldn't install it. I know John had his set up so that he could and got the idea from him. One thing that I like a little better is that you tap the holes that the fast hitch braket mounts to that way you don't have all the stress on three six inch bolts but 6 1 1/2" bolts. You will be able to see that in the pics I will get as well. I might have a tracing somewhere of the ones that I made a couple years ago. I will look for it. If not I can trace the one on the tractor.

Best of luck.
Dave

I went to the shed this evening to take pictures of the extension brackets, and after half hour of searching and not finding them (only took off 2 weeks ago) I gave up and decided I had better take a day or two to straighten and clean the shop before I did anything else. My parts washer is just outside the door, and as I walked past it I remembered I had put the brackets in it due to the despeeder seal leaking on them. Here are the ones Rick made for me.
