I hate cosmoline
It was a balmy 45 degrees today so I went down to the shed to look over the nos block I got from Justin (NOSIH). Got some pleasant surprises. Has distributor seal already installed. Has manifold studs, all the oil galler plugs, oil pump studs, etc. already in place. I had expected it to be necessary to transfer all of that from the old engine. There was also a drain pipe and cap for the filter housing. The main bearing holders are notched for the later style to prevent spinning. Problem is I am haivng trouble getting the cold cosmoline off my hands. I have been giving thoughts to sticking my hands in gasoline and then lighting them to get it off, but that seems a little extreme.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I found the same surprises in my new block too.
I have been wearing the blue nitrile gloves for handling and cleanup. They're not to nice to wear while handling small parts, keeping them on has made my hands smell beter when I'm hunched over the coumputer all day. I've gone through almost half a box and I'm not even half done with this project.
And after cleaning just one end of the block with kereosene, I decided that it will be well worth the money to have it hot tanked. That cosmo is nasty and in all kinds of small spaces. I'd have to steal every one of my q-tips to finish thejob.

You guys are being cry babies on this one That is the easy cosmoline to remove...... The stuff that was originally put on pistons & sleeves for the 10-20 & 15-30 is extremely hard to remove.. The easiest way to remove the old cos is to either have it hot tanked (make sure you oil the valve seats & cylinders immediately), or to soak the block in kerosene or diesel.. The hot tank idea will definately ruin the distributor seal.. I wish the block would have been wrapped in a container like the pistons & rings were (light cosmoline on those).. The sad thing is, I am now sold out of the blocks (pending funds)..

I honestly have not had that good of luck with anything that evaporates quicker than paint thinner or acetone. MEK especially evaporates way too quick.. I would assume a standard parts washing solution may work well also.. We just generally use diesel or kerosene and 0000 steel wool to remove cosmoline.
