Switch labels
Can anyone tell me how the light switch was labeled on a '50 FCUB with a 4-position light switch? Also, was the rear light switched by this switch or by one mounted on the housing? I can barely make out the first two marks from left to right...they are L & H. The last two marks look like a D (could be O) and a B (maybe an R).
Were the first two positions for the generator system? Most of the wiring on this tractor had previously been cut away by some helpful soul in the past, but there is a wire going from the extra contact on the bottom of the switch to the area of the generator & relay that is dead-ended, and it doesn't seem to be for the headlights.

4 positions are L = low charge, H = high charge, D = dim lights, and B = bright (actually less dim) lights. The rear light is wired to this switch, but some of them had a switch that switched them between a white work light and a red tailight. those are pretty rare. There is a seperate terminal for the rear light so it shines on bright whenever the front lights are on. Also the charge is set to high anytime the lights are on. The charge rate (if you still have a cutout rather than a regulator is controlled by a wire that runs from the field terminal of the generator to one of the terminals of the light switch.

Thanks, John! That's exactly the info I needed. I suspected most of it, but I couldn't find a drawing anywhere that showed a 4-position switch so I couldn't confirm it. I thought that the generator charge rate must tie in there somewhere, but there's no way I would connect the generator to the light switch without positive info.
Someone in the dim, dark past had attacked the wiring on this tractor with cutters, so I couldn't be sure where anything went. You're right...it DID have a cutout relay, but I have since replaced the generator & relay with a Delco alternator & electronic regulator. The entire tractor has been upgraded to a 12-volt system.
I didn't know about the rear light...it was missing when we got the tractor. I knew it hooked in somewhere, but I could find no way that the headlights could be on without burning the rear light...I didn't know that it was supposed to be on with the headlights. That answers a lot of questions. As for the red light feature...I don't know if this tractor had it, but the owner doesn't need it anyway. He still has to buy a rear light, and I suspect that his choice will be dictated by availability rather than desire. I probably won't have to worry about switching the light from white to red.
Thanks again...I'm a happy Cubber now!

Ron, that's a very handy ilustration.
Cubnut, while on the ones I've seen the original wiring was the rear ligh on anytime the lights were on, but I have a 48 that I rewired so the rear light is independedt of the headlights, and also have seen them with a switch on the rear light so it wasn't on unless needed.

Hmmmm......since I have to completely rewire this tractor (non-stock), I might do the same to it...it seems like a waste to have the rear light on when it's not needed. My neighbor still hasn't bought a rear light, but I doubt that he'll find one out there anywhere that has a factory switch on it. I guess I could just add a toggle switch to turn it on, but I don't want to modify a good rear light...maybe I'll mount the switch some other place. Good idea...thanks again!
I would love to see Ron's pic of the switch & wiring, but for some reason I don't have any picture or any way to see it on my computer. What am I doing wrong? I need to see that switch!!!

Ron & Bill:
Thanks for trying, guys, but I still can't see them. When I click on the links I get the page, but it is blank. Must be something I'm doing wrong on my end, or maybe some software is missing from my computer. I know even less about computers than I do about Cubs (*sniff!* *sob!*)
At least I got the info I needed. You guys saved what's left of my sanity!

I'm using XP Pro with IE6, but it's an off-the-shelf version (not OEM) with only the bare basics & no frills. There's no doubt that I'm missing an application somewhere, and I wouldn't know which one. It seems to work OK on most other websites, but for some reason it comes up short on this one (the most IMPORTANT one!!!) and it's kind of frustrating when I miss good stuff. For instance, I have never been able to view a pic that someone posts on this forum...I see lots of posts where people say, "Hey, look at this", but I see nothing unless they post a link, then the link doesn't come up for me. I'm on the world's worst backwoods dialup...could that be part of it?
On my options, I have HTML turned off but everything else is on.
My e-mail addy is gordons@sabinenet.com

Found this in the help for IE 5.5. Note, turning on the view pictures will make opening web pages slower, especially if you are on a slow dialup. I used to be on a vary slow dialup when i first got internet and used thsi option.
To turn off graphics to display all Web pages faster
On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab.
Under Multimedia, clear one or more of the Show pictures, Play animations, Play videos, or Play sounds check boxes.
Notes
If the Show pictures or Play videos check box is cleared, you can still display an individual picture or animation on a Web page by right-clicking its icon, and then clicking Show Picture.
If the pictures on the current page are still visible after you clear the Show pictures check box, you can hide them by clicking the View menu, and then clicking Refresh.

Ron,
IMHO, you've just provided the holy grail of illustrations for all of us older year Cub owners! The only reference that I've ever seen to the wiring on a 4 - selector switch is the Owner's Manual on Rudi's site and it's very blurry and hard to read. Every other switch design that I've seen referenced never has the generator resistor coil on it.
Thanks for the help!
