C-2 mower idler pulleys

Postby Buzzard Wing » Fri Mar 04, 2005 4:07 pm

Finally getting to where I can pull the mower off and I have a question about the two idler pulleys.

The pulleys are different sizes. But my real question is, are the bearings replaceable? It kinda looks like they are not, but until I clean em up I won't know for sure.

At least one of them needs bearings pretty bad.

I will snap a picture and post it in a bit.

Thanks

BW - You can pick up generic 6" idler pulleys at a Woods dealer or even TSC. Or most cub cadet dealers etc.

BW, You can drill out the rivets and put a new bearing in and replace rivets with cap screw and nut. Bearings cost me about $ 4.00 couple of years ago.

C-2 mower

Postby S.H.A.F.T. » Sun Mar 06, 2005 9:21 am

Buzzard wing, my pulleys were shot too when I got my C-2 mower. Went to my local IH dealer and got a pair. Had them on the shelf. They should both be the same size, not different sizes. The replacement pulleys are identical to my original ones.

The bearings on my 6' Woods belly mower (on a 9N) have been very noisy for several years, but I never got around toit to replace the spindle bearings. Last year it suddenly became very quiet... just like new!   I happened to look down at one of the idler pulleys and it was RED and throwing sparks. The bearing had finally seized and the pulley itself had worn badly around the center hole. :o A replacement pulley from New Holland made it sound like a new mower. :D I never knew the tractor was pulling the extra load.

I always seem to have more questions...

Any idea what the pulleys cost? I would guess (hope) less than $20?

Jim, that is a fine looking Cub. But adds yet another question. The angle iron from this mower goes to almost the very outside of the support frame. And the heads of the bolts are (or nearly) touching the bolts that attach the drawbar to the side plates. Yours are closer to the middle. Not the best pictures but you can see the difference.

Also, after I yanked the support bracket and drawbar it looks like I need to replace/repair the flat stock and bolts that attach the angle iron to the support frame. Anybody know what the IH bolts are supposed to be? Anything special? The parts manual does not cover the mower and the one on Rudi's server does not have parts list/specs for the mower.

Looking at the view from the top looking down I see the nut is loose. Looking in the view of the flat bars and bolts you can see the wear caused by the loose nuts, elongated holes and bolts threads worn off.

Mine is like yours

I think around $32.00 each.
Nothing special about the bolts.
2 new brgs. and a little work much cheaper if the pulleys themselves are OK.

Oh yeah, worn!

That is why I am going to make new ones. Almost may make sense to open this one up and put a bushing in it?!

Thanks for the lowdown on the bolts. I guess I will just get grade 8 bolts and go from there.

For $32 I will drill the pulleys out and get decent bearings. Pretty rusty, but should be fine after I clean em up.

Thanks again.

Here's something else to consider.

The small pulley will spin much faster than the larger one. You may find the bushing in the small pulley wearing out really fast or overheating and seizing if you use the mower a lot.

Good point Carl. I will take a spin by the Cadet dealer and see what he has.
I suspect it won't run so much that it would be a problem though.

Lots more rivets in the bigger idler.
