I ran across this from the engine block from a '49. The motor has been recently overhauled, so I put it in my '74, whose motor had blow-by really bad, stuck valve, and just general malaise. Anybody have an idea what this pipe plug is there for?

I checked all 3 Cubs - none of them have a pipe plug there or any obvious sign of one. The 1948 doesn't even have that angled 'brace' cast between the filter canister and the block where your pipe plug is. The contour between the canister and the block is uniform. But the 1952 and 1962 have the brace.
Only the 1962 has the round plug cast on the bottom of the filter canister that might interfere with a 12V starter.

HR, one possiblility is that it is so you could tap into the oil pressure and used it to lube something else??
I would have to look at the lube chart in the manual to see if there is pressure on the top of the filter.

I tried for about a 1/2 hour to get that plug loose. It's in a corner such that I couldn't get a pipe wrench on it. I did however get an end wrench on it, but pulling hard, plus a couple of good wraps with a hammer yeilded nothing. I decided to let a sleeping dog lay. I too agree it goes into the water jacket. Probably rusted in place. If it were oil behind it, probably would have come loose.
