mower blade overlap

Postby ducati750 » Thu Apr 21, 2005 9:43 pm

In the instruction manual for the IH C-3 mower it says that the blades overlap by 1-3/4". How is this possible without the blades hitting each other? obviously you can "time" them so they do not hit innitally but what if one blade should strike something and stop momentarily. I ask this because I bought the Pennington 59" mower and it did not come with blades. I am looking for the correct length blade and am looking at the IH mower as an example.

The C-3 blades are staggered: ie, the one in the middle is behind the two on each side. The blades overlap in cutting path only, not in a straight line per say, where they could , in theory as you said, collide in time.

On the Ih C3 and the Woods 59, the blades are not in a straight line. The center one is slightly behind the others, so the total length of the blades is more than the totla width of the mower. For them to be in a straight line, they would have to be together with gears to keep them timed.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

In case you can't see this in your mind, try this: take 3 dinner plates and lay them on the table in a straight line so they touch. Then slide the middle one toward you say 6 or 8 inches. Then slide each of the side plates in towards each other equal distances of about 1 1/2 inches or so. Now you should see how the blades overlap but won't hit each other.

ducati750,

Maybe tomorrow I'll measure the blades for my Pennington if you like.

My Amigo has an interesting 2 blade mower that has overlapping blades. They are timed and are driven by a bicycle chain.

Thanks for explaining that to me guys. I feel sorta silly for not seeing that. I would really appreciate it if you could measure your blades George.

I just dug the blades out and I suspect they aren't original for the Pennington. In any case, they are 18 5/8" long, 2 1/4" wide, and 1/8" thick with a 1" center hole bushed to 1/2". It's the bushed center hole that makes me suspect they aren't original, but they have obviously used, so they will work.

mower overlap

Thanks for measuring George. I found 19" blades with a 1/2" hole 2-1/2" wide, and .204" thick from a company called Rotary. Sounds like they should work just fine.

ducati750,

I left out one important detail, but you've probably already figured it out! When viewed from the top, the blades turn clockwise, so the mower discharges to the right.

One more added thought... Make sure the blade length is less than the center to center distance of the spindles.

Thanks George, I had thought about the direction of rotation but is good to be double checked. The spindle spacing is 20-1/4".
