What color to paint certain parts.

Postby kylev » Wed May 11, 2005 11:41 pm

I am restoring my 1951 cub. Can anyone tell me what parts are red and if there are any parts that were white. I see alot of pictures that have some white on them and some that are not. I would like to keep it original. Rear wheels, starter, generator, front grill etc....

I believe that originally everything was red, generator, starter, sparkplug wires, etc, with the only exception bbeing the radiator was black, but not protected so it had a lot of red oversparay and the rear rims were galvanized.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Kylev,

I think that you'll find a lot in the way of opionions on this one. Henry is painted all red with the following exceptions.

The rear rims are silver.
The generator is black
The magneto is red
The original magnetor coil cover is black
The distributor cap is black
The intake part of the manifold is black
The exhaust part of the manifold is rust (no joke here. Any paint that you put on it will burn right off. Same goes for the exhaust pipe itself).
The muffler is silver
Radiator is black
Carb is nekkid

Hope this helps. Looks kind of like my tractor when I first got it.

Are there any cracks on the bottom corners of the dash? Many have stress related cracks and need welding before painting.

This is true. I had to braze my dash right next to each mounting hole on the bottom. Nice blasting job BTW.

yes I am doing that first thing in the morning and then I will prime and paint it. I have to do it quick because of flash rusting but I am keeping the dash in my house currently so that moisture will not get to it in the night
