Front Wheel Lugs

Postby ScottyG » Tue May 24, 2005 6:22 am

Does anyone know of a common NAPA or hardware store equivalent lug bolt for the front wheels? The bolt has a tapered underside so that it seats flush with the hole.

Thanks.

That's the "bolt" that holds the front wheel onto the hub?
I think TM Tractor Spares have them, I need some also

:D I looked all over and finally found them at the Case/IH dealer. Should have looked there first!

I don't know about NAPA but I got mine at IH dealer, 5 in a pkg, part #
351846 R1. Price wasn't too bad.

I have been told that the rear wheel bolt on a older cub cadet is the same size. I don't think they will have dots on them, but maybe the IH.
If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use duct tape.

I don't know if you want to be 1 Politically correct or 2 just don't want the wheels to fall off. If #2 take one as a sample and go to any auto supply or farm supply and done.

if #1. take your time and find the correct one.

That was already covered earlier in the thread so I did not think to repeat it.
The Epay ones aledge to be origional too. The thing that gets with some of the PC stuff is did IH use different markings on the head of the bolts in different years? If so you could own a 1956 with the wrong front wheel bolts but they would be correct for a 1955. I am 73 now and expect to live to 106. That means that I have only 33 years left. That doesn't leave me enough time for that stuff.
Of course if I live to a healthy 120 I will be sorry I had the wrong lug bolts.

Beaconlight: A good philosophy. I like that, eliminates a lot of stress. Perhaps you will live to reach 120. Dan

Thanks for all your comments everyone. I know it's not PC but I bought some grade 8 7/16" x 1" fine threads with lockwashers. It will get me by for the time being until I can order some OEMs.

Scotty I hear you but that is not the way to go. Wheel lug nuts and bolts have tapered heads to fit into the tapered holes in the wheels. This is because no matter how tight you fasten two pieces together with out the taper there will be some slippage and you will wallow out the holes in the wheels. If you have lost some and only need a few make sure each wheel has at least 2 origionals and oposite each outher. That should keep things from slipping about and damaging the wheels. The tapers are there for a purpose.

The FRONT wheel lugs on a Cub are the SAME as the REAR lug bolts on a Cub Cadet  . The only difference is the Cadet lugs have the IH logo stamped on each one and the Cub lugs have a raised "dot" in the center 8) .I have extras if anybody needs some...just email me please.
