Clutch Shaft Removal

In my first post I asked about a clutch shaft with a slight bend and was advised to remove it and have it straightened. I am trying to remove it and have progressed to the point as shown in the picture below. Is there any way to remove the shaft without disassembling the transmission? My plan had been not to tackle the transmission until I got the engine running. I know that this might not be the best plan but I did not want to have everything disassembled at one time.

engage the pto so that gear does not fall in to the diff, remove trans shifter so you watch the gears as the shaft is pulled, remove the front seal, shaft is now free to pull out, the two top gears will fall out of place a little when you pull the shaft so you just wiggle them back in to place when installing the shaft, make sure to check the rear shaft bearing as that is a weak spot on these old cubs, if your old shaft is pitted where the bearing rides replace it, replace the front bearing and seal also

The procedure for removing the clutch shaft worked like a charm.. The shaft showed no pitting and now that it is out I don't think is has a bend. Thanks to TIM for the assistance.

In the while you have it out department......Check the PTO pilot bushing and take a good look at the PTO splines to see they aren't rounded. Both are at the very rear of the shaft.

Also make sure the openings that carry oil to the front and rear shaft bearings are open and not plugged with sludge.

Glad you mentioned that John the opening for my rear bearing was plugged up with sludge!

A lot of them are, it is amazing how long these things last with problems like that. Probably about the only time it is good to have a lot of water in the oil. With the higher level some of it gets splashed directly into the bearing. I guess if you look hard enough there is a good side to everything. :lol:

Where are the openings that you are talking about located? This is my first time checking the shaft and I am not sure what I am looking at.
I am including a picture of my shaft with the front bearing driven back so that you can see the area where the bearing rides. The bearing was hard against the splines behind it but could be moved by hand about 1/16 back and forth on the shaft. It could be moved enough to cover the groove around the shaft.

In the below photo, I am using a bicycle spoke to clean out the hole over the rear bearing. There is a similar hole in the transmission case over the front bearing.

The opening to the front bearing was open but the one to the rear was blocked. I guess that is more reason to be concerned about the rear bearing's condition.
