No holes

Postby Eoghan » Fri Jan 10, 2014 12:48 pm

My 1955 cub has no holes in the hood to oil the generator. I've seen in a few threads saying that this is an interesting fluke in some 55ers... however, i find myself wondering how do I oil the generator without them? i can't even see the oil cups let alone get my oil can up there..

Actually, it is a fluke in all 55's...http://www.savethecub.com/55hood.htm

If you still have the original generator you will need to pull the hood. New generators have sealed bearings and do not need service.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Not to throw a wrench in the mix, but my 53 has no holes.

I don't have a close up of it, but it is a 53 hood with no holes. They have not been filled as I have had the hood off several times and looked for signs of weld, bondo, whatever, and it never had holes.

Can you reach the oilers with a "zoom spout oiler"? Seems to me if the voltage regulator is removed, one could reach through and feel the zoom tube in position. I could reach the back without excessive trouble. Zoom spout oilers are made for HVAC service techs and others who work around electric motors under 5HP. They are a 4 oz. squeeze bottle of light grade mineral oil with an 8" plastic tube that pulls out from the top. I've found them very handy around the shop and farm.

A Zoom Spout is exactly what I use. I've had one for many years, and I don't use it often, but sure comes in handy when there is no other way.
