Direct grounding works on the starter so somehow the starter isn't grounded.

I've cleaned all bolts and threads and I am still not getting a ground at those locations where the starter attached the mount point.

What's the best recommended way to get the ground out that far? I can run a wire directly to it at an attaching bolt I guess but any better way?

I haven't skipped it. I read everything and thought I responded to it. The oil pump is primed. Just need it to turn over to verify everything else is ready to go.

the last thing I do is start the cub ?? I take the hood off ( really ) , take out the plugs , and put a little mixture of oil/marvel mystery oil (seafoam?) then turn with a hand crank a few times , take the carb off , put a good carb with pony tank on, remove dist/or mag , put on a good magneto/spark plug wires . drain the oil , put in new oil and prime the pump. check coolant , then try to start . the last cub I bought ( a week ago ) needed new spark plugs , the ones that came with it looked fine , but , I dinked around for two hours trying this and that , then I put new plugs in it , and it fired right up ( too much oil/marvel mystery oil ?) . you never know. I then proceed to the fluids that move ( throwout bearing/ tranny/finals/tierod/steering , ect) coppersmythe............... ps: I have just started to check compression , too . thanks Eugene , invaluable.

I've checked the cub out and everything "seems" fine and sound other than the grounding. Spark plugs are good, oil is fresh, water is fresh, no leaks, wiring is correct. I'm not swapping out the coil and other parts until I see that everything else is in order or not. Its got lubrication in the cylinders and the motor turns over easily. I want the starter to work before I continue with any other steps. Its ready for the first turning over and running *i hope* in at least two years. Then comes the rest of the checks.

So any hints on proper grounding? Its negative grounding, not positive, with a 12V upgrade, 6V starter.

Thanks!

To state what may be obvious, the starter is grounded where it bolts to the tractor. I would pull the starter off and clean that area pretty well of paint and crud and bolt 'er back on. Make sure the battery and ground wire (both ends) have good clean connections too. Should be good to go. Good luck and welcome to the site!

Howdy all. Its been a while since I posted and I have been really busy. My dad and I cleaned up all the bolts, all of the starter, ignition coil connections, points and recharged the battery.

The starter finally got the correct ground and everything eventually fired up. I started it and drove it around for a little while, when sometimes the engine idles way down and eventually dies off once in a while. But it consistently starts and runs, but with it in gear, sometimes drops too low to keep running. Its a start!!

Thanks all for the help so far!
