Not charging
My 55 Loboy (distributor ignition) , is not charging. I did the basics (including new (tested good on another tractor) vr) and am thinking that the gen is bad. I removed the belt and applied voltage to the gen with the field grounded and it runs, however it does not spin faster when I remove the field ground. Bad field? What do I look for to repair fiield? Springs on brushes seem free and I sprayed cleaner to clean up commutator. Everything looks connected and tight, but I have not taken the gen apart yet. Thanks! Gary

Re: Not charging
With both wires removed from the generator, check continuity between the FLD & ARM terminals, there should be continuity there. The field wire inside the generator is very small and may be broken. I've seen dirt dobbers build nest in them and the first time the generator turns, it breaks that tiny wire.

Re: Not charging
Thanks Gary! In removing the wires from the generator I noticed the terminals were coated with what looked like never seize. I didn't get any continuity, but saw the meter jump when I scraped the lead across it... turns out never seize is NOT conductive! Cleaned up the terminals and it works like a champ. Love it when it is easy!
