Yes, it sure makes some funky wobbles in the picture doesn't it! I'll not use that again.

I promised a couple of folks I would post a vid of the Cub with both despeeders engaged, so here it is. Just a real quick shot, but it should give you an idea of the speed. Throttle is in the first notch, so I guess you would call this idle.

I guess you can call that a slow-mow-tion tractor.

Re: Just a quick vid of me riding the Cub around the yard
Radec, I am still learning about all this stuff, but from what I understand, the Howard Despeeders are basically a gear reduction unit (it's a planetary gear arrangement) that mounts between the transmission and the final drive to the wheel. This was an option available from the factory, and I guess they could also be gotten as add-ons as well. Each despeeder adds about 6 inches to the width of the wheel base.
Most tractors only got one despeeder, but the specially modified highway/slope mowers (like mine) had two, one mounted on each side of the transmission. The brochure for the slope mowers (you can find this in the literature links at the top of the page) explains that the combination of the two despeeders results in 9 forward speeds and 3 reverse, the slowest forward speed being 1mph (demonstrated in my 2nd video).
Unfortunately, the reduced speed does NOT equal increased pulling power, and many despeeders were / are destroyed by folks overloading them.
Did I miss any important points?

Arthur, your second video reminds me of long years ago of my first job as a youngster. I was hired to drive the tractor pulling a tobacco picker thru the fields. Thanks for the video, Tom.

That is pretty neat! I was wondering why it was so wide in the first video.
Do you have any pictures of the units? How are they engaged?
Thanks

Radec, you can see some photos of the despeeders in one of my other threads:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=84544
If you page down the thread and look through the photos, you can see how the despeeders are mounted as well as the control that engages them.
Tom, you are most welcome!
