Noisy gears after oil change

Postby clintmo » Sun Sep 14, 2014 7:39 pm

I drained, flushed and refilled the transmission case in the '55 today and he was pretty whiny afterward. Is that normal? Was that just him saying "thanks?" The stuff that came out was otherwordly.

Did you use Hy-Tran or gear oil?

So your saying Hy-Trans is better to use than 90W Gear Oil?

Not in my experience with a whining transmission.

:Dito: Gear is much heavier than Hy-Tran. Better at quieting the gears.

Yes it is which is why I asked the question since havoc1482 said it was why clintmo's gears were noisy I thought maybe I missed something.

Some old Allis Chalmers tractors used 240 wt gear lub., which is just a bit more runny than gun grease. 140 wt gear lub may quiet down the noise a bit.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Don't overlook Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer. It can also help quiet noisy gears. The only permanent solution is to replace the bearings, however.

For thicker gear oil, Mobil/Esso 's Spartan gear oils might be worth looking at. They are single weight and start at 150 and go up to 460.

My only concern about the heavier oils is whether their viscosity will allow them to drip through the two holes that lube the bearings.

I have the same issue. Thicker oil may mask the noise while speeding up the day it comes apart (with wrenches or by itself!).
