Carb tap

Postby paw's49 » Sun Jul 10, 2005 11:35 am

Well, what size/kind of tap do I need for the carb inlet? Got my new gas line bent, and attached to the new sediment bowl. Was attaching it to the carb, and I reckon I gave it 1 turn too many....threads are stripped now. I guess what I should have done was tighten it to a certain point, put some gas in - if I had leaks, tighten more, but if no leaks, leave well enough alone. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Thanks guys. OH! and, would this be a PIPE tap, or regular?

The thread is a 1/2-20 NF thread. The fuel line uses a compression fitting.

There have been a couple write-ups on how to repair the threads with JB Weld. I think one of the explanations is on Rudi's server.

OK, I found the JB Weld write-up. Do you guys have a preference? I mean, do you try the usual tap first, and then if that don't work, go for the JB?

And just to make sure, is this the right thing?

Craig:

Looks like the critter to me. Check to make sure that it is NF before ordering.

I have never had to reapir one, but if I remeber correctly from some other posts that is not a pipe thread, but a standard bolt thread. The link appears to go to a pipe tap.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

John:

As usual - right again. Seems my brain is decreasing in it's ability to comprehend basic english as I get older I guess -   Vermont American Tool 1/2-20 Plug Style Black Pipe Hand Taps - must have been something about the Black Pipe that I didn't quite get :!:

This should be the correct link:

Vermont American Tool 1/2-20 Plug Style Carbon Steel Hand Taps

I hope :!: :?

This is a NF Tap Snap On Tools: Tap, NF, 1/2"-20 , however it again is a plug style.

This is a 1/2 Inch - 20 Nf Bottoming Tap.
I think I am going to make a page with a list of these required taps etc., for the carb rebuild.

The tap in the link is a straight tap. It appears to be the one you need except that a "bottom tap" would work better in this case. Check with http://www.mcmaster.com and you should be able to find just what you need.

Well, I just ordered a 1/2 20NF bottom tap - thanks for all your inputs. Rudi, that tap page would be great!! Cause, until I worked on the Cub, the only taps I ever heard about were on shoes. Any of ya'll wanna date yourself, and tell me that you remember, as a cool guy in high school, you just had to have a pair of those taps on your shoes? And if you really wanted to be cool, they weren't the little taps that fit on the outside edge of the heel, but to be really cool, you got those big ol horseshoe taps - covered the whole heel! Yep, they could hear ya coming then!!
Thanks again....

Craig: The large heel taps were popular when I was in junior high. I had a pair and I found it necessary to sharpen my pencil quite often, always landing on the heel of my shoes for maximum effect as I walked. My teachers ignored it for a few days, then began to describe in detail where their shoe was going to contact my anatomy if I continued to sound off. Strange, but my taps didn't make nearly as much noise after the warning. Dan

When I was a kid we used to call them half moon clickers on the heel, and horseshoe clickers on our Wellington Boots. Some of the guys used to put Hobnails on the soles of their boots. They were all pretty noisey but slippery. That was awhile ago. 8) :) Bruce

Guys:

I am working on doing up that How To Find the Right Taps page for the How To section and the Cub Manual Server.

So far I gots this

1/2"-20 NF Bottom Tap for the Fuel Inlet
4-48 NF Bottom Tap for the Idle Tube

Now, I think this is correct, but I want to be sure -

1/4-20 NC for the Manifold Studs Part # 179 796
1/8-27 NC for the Plug Auto Sq-Hd Pipe Part # 444 571
6-32 NC for the Carb Body Cap Screws Part # 131 899
10-24 NF for the Screw Part # 26 668 R1 (which one is that??)
5-40NF for the Butterfly, Throttle Screw Part # 147 754
4-40NF for the Shutter Assembly Starting Screw Part # 132 622

:?: :?: :?: Am I correct here :?:

Does anybody know what taps are required for the following:

351 958 R1 Screw, Idle Adjusting,
354 192 R91 Jet, Main Metering

Am I missing anything else?

Thanks, will look for your input..

I was just wondering, if you stripped the threads on the carb top plate inlet, what good will running a tap in there do?? You'd still not have enough % of thread to generate the torque needed to seal the fuel line flare. I did read the part about JB weld. Is that stuff good enough(strength and lasting) for such an important thread repair? I have never used it yet on anything though.
I'd look into whether there is enough wall thickness there to go to a Heli-coil perhaps. Just my 2 cents....worth..ABOUT 2 cents !!

Marion,

You are correct, the best way to fix the threads is an insert, but many a carb has been fixed with JB weld and they are still holding up.
