IH50 blower on a Farmall Cub?

Postby Larry in WNY » Fri Dec 12, 2014 12:54 pm

Has anyone on this site installed a IH 50 snowblower on a Farmall Cub? I saw other Cubs on the internet with different snowblowers on them. I found a very nice IH50 at the scrap yard and have 2 Cubs to run it. My first idea is to get the Wisconsin VF4D engine I bought 20 years ago off the shelf to run it. I picked up a PTO clutch for it last week. All brackets to mount the IH 50 and engine need to be fabricated. All this hinges on the Wisconsin motor coming back to life. Good summer project. Or find a good 154 or 184. If have a Ford 1600 2 cylinder diesel that's similar to the 184, but the PTO is 540 rpm and runs clockwise (I think) so that won't work.

Larry,
The IH-50 is real similar to the Danco snow blower that is pictured in Ken Updyke's Farmall Cub books, mounted on a Cub and a Lo-boy. Matter of fact, Danco probably built the IH-50 for IH. Anyway, I'm sure it would mount on a Cub and the Cub could handle it. However, the bigger problem with a standard Cub and running it from the PTO is the inability to slow down the ground speed of the tractor to let the snow blower work. On a number series, the Creeper drive was necessary to run a snow blower or tiller.

However, your thought about using the Wisconsin engine to run it is probably a better option. Again, the tractor will handle the snow blower, and you can idle the engine down to slow your ground speed down, but leave the Wisconsin revved up to turn the snow blower. Rick Prentice built one of these a few years back. I'll see if I can find that thread.

The original Danco snowblowers have/had their own engines to power them. This allowed you to idle the Cub down and move slow enough for the blower to work.

Every time I'm out with my piddly little 28" push blower, I say to myself, "Someday, I'm going to build something like that for my Cub."

Connectkit a while back posted a picture of a double vee grooved crank pulley for an fcub. This would allow a live driven pto from the crankshaft. I'm not fond of the single stage snowblower. I'd rather a two stage blower.

The best two stage snowblower I have ever used was a gravely model LI OR L8 with the 4:1 ratio open sided two stage snowblower. I was throwing 4" of heavy wet slush over the tops of the telephone poles.

If we look at the old fcub pictures in Kens book I don't think there was another engine driving the blower. I could be wrong.

The int154 lo boy has the creeper and the live PTO.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

The pulley with multiple groves in different diameters is available from BROWNING and can be adapted to the cub PTO with the correct bushing. Check industrial mill supplies like Motion Industries. Stan
