Mystery Holes

Mystery Bolts 003.JPG

Mystery Bolts 001.JPG
I'm preparing my engine for paint when I noticed these two threaded holes on the side of the head. (I've inserted the 3/8" bolts in the holes so you can see what I'm referring to.)

I'm sure I bagged & tagged everything as I disassembled the engine, or I thought I did. I can not find any reference to these holes in any publication I have. The only thing I can think of maybe they are for a couple of oil gallery plugs.

Anybody got any ideas?

Thanks, Larry

No oil galleries in head, so not for oil gallery plugs.

What is the part number on the head?
I have an excuse. CRS.

I don't remember them being there when I took it in to the machine shop. But I'm sure they didn't drill and tap them just for kicks.

They are positioned so that I can see the head bolts. Is there any coolant in that area? Besides buying a new head, can I use something to plug the holes?

:help:

Hardware store with current bolt in hand. Pick up two bolts of the same size and thread pitch perhaps about 3/8" long. Put some thread sealant on the bolt threads.

If you don't want the bolt head to show, consider allen head screws, they should screw in flush with the edge of the head. Thread sealer should take care of any leak.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm heading to town Monday and see what I can find.

I'm pretty sure those holes were not there when I dropped off the motor for the rebuild. I'll be talking with the machinist Monday to see what he has to say. Onward and upward :!:

He may have accidentally gotten it switched with another one. Not unusual for a rural shop to have more than one head of that type head around.

Nope, it's the one that came out my tractor. Would a stationary engine have had some type of attachment that was bolted to the head? I sure would like to have that information on hand when I talk with the builder tomorrow.

That could very well be what happened. I know that the builder sent my crankshaft off to be turned, he might have sent the head off to be milled also.

Does the casting code on the mystery head match those on the rest of the tractor?
