12volt battery to start6volt
Ok folks, I have a 1950 cub with 6volt positive ground system. It has a generatorand a magneto. Will it hurt to use a 12volt battery on it?i am currently running a 6vokt battery and the Generator does not seem to charge the battery. The 6volt battery also does not turn it over very fast but when you jump it with a 12volt it starts right up. Thought maybe a 12volt battery and a manual charger might be a solution....

Take the wires off the generator (particularly the F wire), don't turn the lights on and everything will be fine. However, it should start while turning over slowly. You probably have some underlying problem: tune-up, poor compression etc.

Has the magneto been altered in any way? If not, and as Jim said, you should be able to start it cranking slowly as that was the way a mag was designed to work.
