Re: Engine rebuild 1949 Cub.
Bolt question. The bolts for the head are in various condition, and I assume the threads are in similar condition, but are not visible. Head bolts are a bit pricey at Steiner..... Has anyone found similar/same bolts at a hardware store, or am I going to have to buy the expensive ones at the tractor restoration places?
What about the bolts for the wheel to rim bolts? Can I use bolts from hardware store, or are the square head bolts the only ones that will fit.
Painted front half of tractor today. Waiting for the oil pump gasket to arrive. Once I have the pump gasket, I think I can get the rear end, engine and front end of the tractor assembled. Then start connecting hoses and installing the coil, generator, starter...

I use Grade 9 bolts from McMaster Carr and trim them to the exact length. Use sealer on the bolts as the hole go straight through into the coolant chamber. Coolant frequently weeps up the bolts without some sort of sealer. I use PTFE paste.

How do you trim them without damaging the threads? Do you put a nut on before cutting, then back the nut off to clean the threads?

Exactly. File the end, wire brush, back the nut off.

Bob, do the bolts have the same amount of thread, or are they threaded full length? Does it matter? I am going to try to find some locally if possible.

Grade 9 matters. There is ample thread.

What is the description of the bolts from fastenal? Length/ diameter? Do you have a part number? Did you get all the same length and trim down, or did you go for three different lengths?
Just came in from painting one of the rear rims.

Re: Engine rebuild 1949 Cub.
I have been to both the Fastenal and McMaster Carr sites and can't seem to find the bolts. Would you mind sending me a link to the specific bolts that I should get for the head? I am obviously searching the site incorrectly.

Re: Engine rebuild 1949 Cub.
Hi,
I've never bought the bolts at Fastenal, so I don't know about their numbers.
Here is a page from the Cub parts book with the head, and bolts, and valves. There should be 2 lengths of head bolts. It doesn't give lengths for the head bolts, just part numbers. I think some of the other guys know the lengths of them, or you can take 2 bolts out and measure them.

Re: Engine rebuild 1949 Cub.
I buy 2-1/2 and 3-1/2 (3/8-16) screws. By the thickness of the head of the bolt, I think the original parts are more than grade 8. When IH uses a part number in the book for a fastener, it has some special characteristics, otherwise they just list the size.
The quality of these fasteners is outstanding, for non-aircraft commercial items. http://www.mcmaster.com/#90201a327/=z27gw5

I will have to locate my receipt with the information, but I bought 2 different lengths and had to wait a couple of days to get US made.

Here's a copy of the invoice for FASTENAL C60 engine head bolts with prices and shipping labels with ID information. I hope this is helpful. Click on the picture makes it larger. Stan
