Implement Paint

Postby Clownfish » Thu Oct 22, 2015 9:35 pm

I have several plows that I am cleaning up to paint. As with most of these old plows they are very rusty. For removing the rust I will mostly use a high speed wire (cup) brush. When I finish they will be clean but not sand blasted clean. I plan to use the ACE International Blue paint which I have never used before. Question is which primer should I use? Searching the forum, I didn’t find a clear answer to this question. I did find one post that said Do Not use Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer.

After wire brush cleaning, I like to spray a coating of rust killer like "OSPHO", let it dry a couple of days, then start the painting. I've had good results. The product is available at my local hardware store. Good luck on your cultivator. Stan

Ospho is an excellent product. You can paint directly over the ospho if you so desire.
If you don't go the ospho route, I'd use the Ace rust stop primer. I have no problem with the Rustoleum primer, either.

Edit: agree with Stanton about the Ace international blue. Love it. I cannot say the same for Ace's AC Orange, however

I've used both Rust-Oleum rusty metal primer and the cheapy Krylon primer on implements; both work well. Believe the Case IH Ironguard primer to be a lot better, but that may not be an option for some. The rusty metal primer may do well for you since you're only wire-wheeling the surface. That's the method I use. Then rub it down with paint thinner before spraying the primer.

Can also attest to the Ace brand International Blue implement paint. Really like that paint; goes on good. :coffee:

I would definitely go over it with something like Ospho or Rust Mort before I painted it.

For bare metal I like to use an Etching Primer. I have been using a Valspar or Majestic gray primer. I know how a lot of people feel about the Majestic brand paints but I have used it and had no problems as of late.

Valspar primer has worked well for me. All top coats I use a urethane based paint anymore. It just holds up better. My opinion. I would use epoxy but it just to expensive.

I have been using a self-etching primer from Wal-Mart with good results! Wipe parts down w/degreaser before priming and can paint over in about an hour! Dusty B

Thanks to everyone for sharing your method for successfully painting implements. I will post some pictures when I finish some of the plows.
