Thank you. Great list. New Cub owner. My cub runs good, and this is a good start on making it stay that way.

This really is a great checklist! Some of these items can really turn into some serious time/effort. But great progression of how to prioritize what to work on.

Re: What to do with a Cub you just brought home
Hi all.
Not a recent purchase at all. I've had this Cub for about 20 years, but last weekend, my 8 year old son said "hey dad, let's get that red tractor running today." So here we are...
I'm going to start a thread on it, as I'm sure to have questions and I do like to share pics and progress.
Thanks for being here.
Matt

I just got a new to me 1949 cub that looks mostly original with good straight tin and these are excellent advice in beginning to straighten out and diagnose a tractor that I have no idea of its history or internal condition. ive read that priming oil pump is also a good idea

Re: What to do with a Cub you just brought home
Hi all, I will be bringing home a 1948 Cub Monday. I will greatly need the .pdf manual. I have a couple other tractors but this will be my first experience with a Farmall tractor. This list of things to do thread is greatly appreciated. I will be going over it all. Just joined the forum today and want to thank all those that have shared their knowledge on here. Thank You.

Re: What to do with a Cub you just brought home
Okay, got Mr. T home today. Pretty rough I'm afraid. Looks like quite a few things are not with the tractor. I was hoping the sellers would find a big box of parts and hardware but nope. I got a few implement pieces with it. Not sure if they are worth much. I was hoping to get a set of cultivators. I may have gotten some at least. Anyway, here are some pictures of the poor guy and all the rusty parts:

Re: What to do with a Cub you just brought home
Mike, You might want to start a separate thread for this Cub. It looks like you have some parts for a cultivator. There are also parts for a two way plow, a 189 moldboard. There is a manual for it in the PDF Manuals. I only see one plow unless the other side is out of the picture. The Cub 22 sickle mower looks to be incomplete. Hydraulics is a plus. There are some parts in the pickup bed that I can't identify.

Re: What to do with a Cub you just brought home
The yellow thing in the bed of the pickup is my rear electric actuator powered sleeve hitch for the Cub Cadet GT2544. There is what I think is a tilt lever for the plow. It's huge. Just a single plow. If I can locate a drawbar and attaching hardware, I could fix that plow up for it. When I find a serial number, I will do as you suggest and start a new thread on Mr. T.

So the kerosene is just to clean it out I guess? Is 85w gear oil just as good as 90w?

Hi,
Joe Drums, I guess you meant using kerosene temporarily in the transmission of a Cub, it has been suggested on here before.
It is used for a short time, to clean the inside of the trans.
You need to find the 3 trans oil plugs to change the trans oil.
The trans oil filler plug is on the top of the trans housing, to the rear of the shifter.
The oil level plug is low on the left side of the trans.
The oil drain plug is at the bottom of the trans, visible from under the platform.
Changing the trans and other oils is explained in the Cub owner's, and operator's manuals.
If you need to use the kerosene, fill the trans to the level of the oil level plug hole, it holds 3 1/2 Pints. Then drive it around for 5 minutes or so.
Drain the kerosene out the drain hole at the bottom of the trans.
You can catch the kerosene in a clean drain pan, so you can see if it dirty.
Fill the trans to the level plug hole with the oil recommended in the operator's manual closest to the year of Cub you have.
Nowadays there is 80W-90 gear oil.
Beginning in about 1958, and after, IH recommended using Hy-Tran fluid in the trans, for those years of Cubs. It is in the operator's manuals.
Nowadays it is Case IH Hy-Tran fluid, it is sold at Case IH dealers.
There are other brands, be sure it works for IH before buying one.
Hy-Tran fluid is used in the Cub Touch Control also.
Some of the Cub operator's manuals after 1958 say you can use gear oil in the trans, if you want.
The operator's manual for the newest Cubs, serial number 248125, mid 1975 and newer, says use Hy-Tran fluid.
Before about 1958, the Cub owner's and operator's manuals said to use gear oil in the trans.

Re: What to do with a Cub you just brought home
I gotta add something here. Check the danged final drives for oil. My 49 right side was bone dry. Needless to say some bearings had to be replaced.
And that steering gear probably has some watery goo that used to be called lube. What there is of it anyways. That seal at the bottom is way low down on the repair lists.
